Concerns about buying car with Rebuilt engine!
Hi all. I am searching very hard for my first 911 (84-89 coupe), and i see a lot of cars with rebuilt engines out there. Should I shy away from these, or should they be considered ready for greater mileage? I understand that I should ask who, what , where, regarding a rebuild, but would an "unopened" car with 140K on it be a better bet than a car with 90K on it and a recently rebuilt engine?
Thanks for any input. Jon |

The price of the car with the rebuild and without should influence your decision. Meaning how much to the price has been added to the car with a rebuild. The quality of the rebuild will determine how much should be added.
The best way to determine the rebuild quality is with a PPI and having the owner present all the receipts for the rebuild. I did most of my rebuild myself and I have about a 2 inch stack of receipts which cover everything from machine shop work to a new set of pistons and cylinders and everything in between. A car with a quality rebuild should provide you with years of happy motoring.

For the Carreras, I would rather have the rebuilt motor over the higher miles one with no rebuild. These motors are prone to valve guide issues and this can pop up at 40k, 80k, 120k or never. For me, a rebuild has already dealt with this issue.
As others have said before, you have to carefully assess the quality and thoroughness of the rebuild to be sure. PPI no matter what. -Chris
