200 mph out of an early 911

Is it possible?
Horsepower?
Reduce drag?
Gearing?
Suspension?
Tires?
A little cabin fever maybe.
It might pass when spring breaks out.

I don't think so. Certianly not with a N/A engine.
At 200 mph you need body work (air dam, wing) to keep the car on the ground. To over come the drag of such devices you need big, big power.

Then again, between the narrower car and lighter weight, coupled with the power of something like a Ruf or 9ff motor would probably do it. You'd need a crapload of gaffer tape to smoothe out the body seams and grind off the rain gutters, not to mention a rear wing, but I'm sure it's possible. Anything is possible...

About 450 hp and some good groud effects to keep you from flying off the road would be a good start.

just borrow a motor from Juan Ruiz or AMAC! i think anymotor over 500hp should be able to push you up over 200mph with the right gearing.... but how scary would that be without the suspension and the bodywork?!?!

235+ down Mulsanne in the late '70s, I don't see why you couldn't get near its performance with enough money.

The basic 911 design lacks the aero design for very high speeds at safety. Then there's the suspension...

I would not even try, tho with enough hp you can push a brick wall to the sound barrier.

Denny Kahler took an early 911 tub, chopped the roof, laid back the windshield, installed slant nose fenders, narrow flares, moon caps, and turbo-ed a couple of different small displacement motors. He took the car to Bonneville and set some records- if memory serves me correct- 212 mph. This is quite an achievement as the timing association requires you to do it twice on a pretty long course in two directions within an hour- some of you salt buffs would know the details. The salt is also not friendly to traction- cars can slide for a loooong ways when they get in trouble.

I think Ross Callon said it best in RFC 1925:

Truth #3: "With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead."

I have a Road & Track mag from 1988 that shows the RUF Yellow Bird topping out at 211 mph. 0-60 @ 4 sec, 0-100 @ 7.3
Not an early, but fast.

Probably done 200mph, about...10-15 times, in the CTR.

It was dynoed at RUF 522bhp@6500

Tyres SP's which are rated to 211mph, thats the only thing the are good for, grip is pathetic, but they are old tyres and very cheap!

Reduce Drag: The car is a narrowbody, based on a Carrera 3.2, however the rear wheel arches are extended slightly to take the larger rear tyres. Also the rear wing is the 3.2's as well. And the wing mirrors are tiny, I was told once that with the larger square turbo wing mirrors installed top speed is lowered by 5mph!

Gearing: The car has six gears. I dont know the exact ratios.

Suspension: We have the hardest suspension setting offered by RUF.

Its very possible yes but also very scary, especially on the autobahn. When you start going past 205mph, the car is difficult to keep in a single lane. Also the wind noise is very high, and the engine is screaming.

all the best
adam
