Removing heater control face?

The lowest heater control slider's red knob fell off the lever on my dad's 74. The metal lever is behind the face (with the 3 heat/defrost/fan sliders). I can see the lever through the slot but cannot get to it - it's all the way to the left.

I think I need to take the control face (w/ the 3 slots) off to pull the lever out and reattach the red knob.

I haven't yet tried to figure out the r&r procedure. Is this straight forward?

Thanks-
Craig Backer

Craig,

It's easy, just crawl under the dash with your favorite (probably 10mm) socket or wench and remove the bracket you'll find. The controls won't move far unless you disconnect the cables in the trunk at the blower motor housing, which is a bit of a pain.

I'd find another way to get the lever to move. How about going in the trunk and moving the lever at the other end of the cable. The lever in the dash should move with it.

Can you stick a small screwdriver or other sharp object in the slit and move the lever over?
