Cost of Valve Adjustment?

What is the average cost of a valve adjustment on a 3.0?

My car has been sitting a while and I have looked through the receipts and the last time it was adjusted was back in 1993... I called a few Porsche Mechanics in my area and its like $400.00...Is this about right?Anyone know of a good wrench in the Inland Empire?

Thanks,

Ed

The Valve Cover Gasket Kit is $20, and the feeler guage tool is ~$10, a Mahle oil filter is ~$7, plus the cost of the oil of your choice, I like Shell Rotella, @ $7/gallon.

Sounds like ~$58.

I did my first one in about 6 hours and it cost about $25 for the gasket kit. Its a little tedious, but not technically difficult. I've heard that a tune up, plugs, points, air/oil filter, oil and valve adjust is about $800.

a mechanic will charge around $300. that is what i dumped. i took a tech session showing how to do it. and i am now using the word "dumped". gavin at gavin motorsports in oakland, CA. was great. he let a few of us get "hands on" with a customer's car. we got to feel first hand, what the feeler gauge is supposed to feel like, with the valve properly adjusted. he even found one a bit loose. i think i got it. i am going to do my own next time. i think it is easier than doing the spark plugs. besides, i am lucky, i have folks like emcon5, that i can bribe over to my house with beer and pizza. right tom?

i found 250. i got the hands on tech class for that same 250. what did i learn? i learned that i will take it back every 3-4 years (approx 15K miles) and have him do it. why? because id trade a day of my labor at work (about 250) to have it done, and drive it the next saturday instead of crawling around under it.

cliff- check your email.

$500 for valve adjustment in Los Angeles. 2 Porsche shops have the same rate. If you want to own older Porsche, you need to know how to adjust valves. I did it myself. Headache but only the first time. My next one should be easy.

$20 gasket, $35 oil change, $10 filter, and about 4 hours of work. I say $500 is a OK price to expect from a very good mechanic.

Doing it yourself, priceless.

Ed,
Truly, the first time is a PITA. The second and subsequent times get easier. I helped a friend do his 2.7 and we were done in about 2 hours doing both the top and bottom and an oil change. If I remember correctly, you were on a fairly tight budget which really illustrates that the buy-in is the cheapest part of ownership. You can save a TON and learn a lot about your car by DIY. Just invite some Pelicans for a valve adjustment / pizza party and you'll get it done. True your time may be worth more than the savings, BUT you'll never get to know your car better than doing the basics....
