Removing center console on a SC BUT keeping A/C Controls? 911SC Where to mount them?
 

I really like the look and added space (even if it seems bigger) removing the center console allows. I am still on the fence about removing my A/C entirely. One of the cars PO's upgraded the A/C system to a Kuehl system and we do have some pretty hot, humid summer days here in MA. My question - Can the center console be removed and the a/c controls be repositioned somewhere else? Has anyone on the list done this? Pics?

Some ideas I had:

Move the A/C controls to a smaller "pod" in the exact same location just cut the top part of the console and screw the top part of the console to the floor. Removing the rest of the console.

Move the controls to a discrete place mounted to the floor under the drivers or passenger seats.

Any suggestions or "found" solutions would be welcome.

If you have deleted your stereo too, putting them on the blanking plate there would look good. Another thought is to remove your ashtray and fab a small flat panel there that could hold the controls.

I did something similar. Realize that your limited by how far you can extend the "temp control" knob, as it includes a capilallary tube filled with freon that cannot easily be extended. This said, an under the seat location is a stretch.

I took the simpliest approach and gutted my ash tray and mounted the 2 control knobs in the "ash" portion of the ashtray with the knobs located below. While you can't see the controls, their functions are pretty obvious.

If you want stereo, you could fab up a small underdash console using the ash tray area as a mount.

Sorry, no pictures since the car is tucked away for the winter.

This is actually a pretty self explanatory relocation of these 2 switches. They fit the ashtray with a bit of cutting and grinding without issue and clean up the look of the interior without the center console.

If your a stickler for keeping your car original, pick up a used ashtray and tuck your original away somewhere. For me this isn't much of a concern.

Is there enough wire/tubing to run to the very back of the "firewall" and then up under the dash to the ashtray? Or did you have to extend the wire and freon tube?

This seems like the perfect solution.

More than enough tubing/wiring. The capillary tube actually exits the firewall up near the center bowtie vent under the dash. This passes into the front trunk and goes into the smugglers box.

Same goes for the electrical leads to the switches. They come down and into the floor console, so relocating them to now go up to the ashtray is a no-brainer.

Once you pull thinks apart it will all fall into place.

I'm a new member and this is my first post on this site. I acquired some good information from this thread so decided I would post what I ended up doing in case someone else finds it useful.

I also wanted to delete the center console but wanted to keep the A/C.. at least for now. I didn't want to cut any holes and wanted the controls to be somewhat hidden.

I ended up fashioning this bracket that I attached to the back of the ashtray mount.

Now to cover the holes left behind I had a vinyl patch made that I glued over the top of the existing vinyl.

Here is my recent solution to this problem. Mounted controls with "project box" from radio shack. Plugged center hump hole w/ grommet and painted aluminum plug. Smaller console mount holes plugged with factory screws using black plastic screw caps.

Moved my A/C controls, rear window defrost and hazard controls to the radio location.

I removed the ash tray and made a mounting plate to go in that area. The wiring and cold control tube reached perfectly.

And I got the idea from Fred.

Fred helped me with a mock up and then I ended up with this as the final solution.

As I don’t think many folks ever use the ashtray, it seems like a wonderful location for the controls. A 3D printed mount that would house the controls in the ashtray space would be a great project!

Yes! I have been meaning to get into 3D printing with my copious spare time. :rollseyes:

But this was one of the first things I wanted to try.

Love the added voltmeter. I’ve been meaning to add an AFR gauge and was going to put it on the bottom of my A/C control mount.

Music is behind. Clock is converted to AFR, boost, intake temperature gauge with PLX hardware.
