My local autoparts store (Checker) carries a 1500lb version for $69.99 IIRC.

I just picked up the craftsman ATV jack from Sears for $79. 1500lb capity and is very solid.

i also use the craftsman jack, however i think the harbor freight one is on sale right now for $59.00 it seems to be pretty good, i looked at it today.

I have used Ingo's approach for the reasons he cites. If you don't like the 2x4 approach, you can also use two jacks, one on each side on jack plates, to raise the car. I prefer that approach when I have an extra jack available.
