Question over 6000 RPMS-feels like it is starving-loss of power//

Just purchased an 87' coupe...during heavy acceleration, over 5500-6500 rpms, the old 3.2 feels like its starving/looses power or flat lines. Car pulls very strong until then and power all of a sudden flatlines out.... Is this normal for these cars-I am use to a 944 turbo?? What could cause this? Where should I look first-fuel system/injectors/distributor/maybe running lean?? This issue just started along with a little backfire and hesitation during normal acceleration in first gear...hope this doesnt cost my 401k to get this fixed...

Car does not have any problem starting when cold, does not smoke or leak, had the top end rebuilt 10k miles ago, currently 126k on the clock.

Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a typical 3.2 to me. Mine seemed "lazy" compared to a earlier 3.6, turbo, and even a 2.4E with webers.

Chip, cat bypass and a good muffler will help these problems, but these cars don't make their peak at this engine RPM, better to short shift before you get to that point, or do what I did and put a turbo on it

I just want to make sure. I loose sleep over things like this, more concerned with my cars well being!! My 944 turbo S screamed, maybe just taking time to get use to the down-grade in HP.

Might be normal. Torque drops off around 5K though I never noticed mine going flat in the upper rpms. I'm sure it feel a lot different than a 944 T. You might consider a dyno session to see what the motor is doing.
Here's a dyno from my 87 when it was stock.

Check the gap on your plugs. Re-set if necessary.

FUEL FILTER. I had the same thing with my car. Changing the fuel filter made a night and day difference.

My 3.2 did the same at 5K until I replaced my ignition cables.

good idea to 'baseline' a new car. new air and fuel filter, oil and oil filter, brakes/fluid, new plugs, cap and rotor, have a shop check/set proper timing, check/set proper mixture. drive the piss out of it for a while, once properly warmed of course..give it some time and see how it does. eliminate a lot of the guess work by doing the immediate maintenance items above..cost a few dollars, but will save you headaches. do what you can yourself, what you're not confident on, find a trustworthy shop. this way you'll get to know more about your car and feel confidence that all the systems are in proper order..no mysteries.

The ignition cables are pretty old. i will change regardless. In the middle of budgeting for new suspension. Probably will not drive it hard until June DE at road atlanta. Think it is ok to wait till then, and baseline check up before event?

Just an FYI, I posted the same topic on rennlist and couldnt get any feedback-not to nock the site, but it is like night and day compaired to pelican!! Thanks for all the feed-back, I think I found my new 911 home!!

the legitimate track gurus on thos board will say that's foolish to wait until just before an event to do this work..they will advise as soon as possible so that you'll 'know' your car well in advance of showing up for a track event and being turned away due to improper setup/condition. roll up them sleeves (or roll that checkbook back out..lol) and get to work, soldier!

What rotor do you have..as I recall there are several rpm cut outs available, to check it put in a non cut out one (be carefull) .
