HELP -broken sway bar mount
 

I was piddling around under the P-car today and found my right rear sway bar mount broken, no wonder it handled a little funny.
1. What causes these to break?
2. Could I have done it by jacking it up?
3. what is the best way to fix this?
4. can this bracket be repaired ?

I do have a welder, wire feed, and some welding skills.

Very common problem, There are new, reinforced replacements available everywhere, including, I'm sure, our host. Might as well do both sides while you have you work clothes on.

You can weld them but I have been told that it is a temporary fix at best. When my left side broke I had it removed and a new reinforced factory mount welded on (do a search and you will find pics I posted). It is a simple and inexpensive job. The newer reinforced design should last close to forever.

May as well remove those and install the Weltmeister (or similar) mounts, which are pretty beefy :)

do it yourself- shops like to charge loot for it- if you weld, it's a a no brainer- just prep it right- search will do it- i think shops here in la want like 200 a side parts and labor- it's a nothing fix but don't be bummed- almost every carrera owner i know has repaired, cracked, or broken mounts-

Now that you've been driving without the benefit of the rear sway, let us know what difference in handling you notice after you get it fixed.

Just yesterday I had the WEVO mounts welded on after my right rear mount sheared off. They are far sturdier than the factory replacement and (IMO) worth the few extra bucks.

How much do they Wevo mounts run for? I too have a broken sway bar mount.

I think our host has them. They are the best choice by far.

Factory mounts, fixed twice PITA
Wevo mounts $89 each
Never to have to worry about them again.

If you've got a decent MIG, go with the smallest wire diameter available and corresponding lower amp setting. Don't get carried away trying to weld the section directly under the torque tube all at once, you'll burn through. Go a little at a time until you get some metal layed down. I did mine and they came out perfect even using fluxcore. If you've had much practice successfully welding to thin sheet metal, you'll be alright.

Just remember to remove the DME brain box prior to welding on your car.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, I do have a small Craftsman fluxcore welder that I plan on doing the job with. Thanks for the additional tip on removing the DME just in case. I'll set my welder on Low and adjust the wire feed speed accordingly. I did a search on our host parts search and could not find these mounts. Does anyone suggest any specific word to try my search again?

Were you looking for WEVO, or OEM?

If you DIY, add some metal gussets or backing. Tyson Schmidt actually boxed them and reinforced them. With a little 3/16th steel scrap, a hacksaw and a grinder, you could do a lot for no $.

Search TS and sway bar mounts. There are some good pics. Of course, he works for WEVO now, so he won't say this is as good for a smaller bar and not full on racing. I think it is.

I had a friend weld mine in I made the mistake of buying Weltmeister - what crap. My friend looked at them and laughed he reinforced them and welded them to a larger pieceof metal and then welded them to the car. This was the second time it was done on the car and I didn't want to do it again
