Dist Cap troubles in LA rainy days

hey LA guys- if your car is outside in this rain or has to be outside- throw a towell over your engine or over the lid under the cover so there's no "non starters" after the rain- just a reminder so we don't get a rash of "my car won't starts" after the weather subsides- can't hurt to prevent- if you have a nice new clean set up then good for you but even then, if your whip has to be in this torrential rain, might as well cover the vitals-

Good advice (even if my car never plays in the rain).

These cars can take a rainstorm, no problem, unless you aren't up on your maintenance schedule. Remember, Germany isn't CA, and they run fine over there too!

The only problem I have ever had in the rain was when the plug wires were in the condition that I received the car in. I spent 15 minutes adding a bit of dielectric grease on each boot where in contacts the cap, the plugs, and the wires. A small touch on rim of the cap to seal it to the distributor. Voila...

I haven't tried it at the submarine races yet but otherwise I never give it a thought. It isn't an issue.

Also, if you spray WD40 inside of the cap and then wipe it all off it will leave a nice protective film incase you have leaks. Just make sure to wipe it all off and a thin coat where the cap meets the base will also keep it dry from that morning dew effect.

If wd40 dont work

If wd 40 dont work, check the age of your spark plug wires.

I recieved a lot of advice on my poor running 911. It was worse when wet.

turns out to be my spark plug wires were 10 yrs old and needed replacing.

I know its expensive...try wd40-ing the outside of the wires.

see if it helps

carreras do have a problem with condensation in the distributor cap. not sure why, because the others don't, but it's common to get calls for a no-start after heavy rains. a bit of silicone paste to seal the cap to the body helps. the drain holes at the bottom of the distributor body can be sealed too.

Jeez, John, when I said that these cars run fine in Germany I didn't mean SEATTLE! That's a different story. That's like driving right through Kartrina!

I would be more scared of forgetting the towel in there than my car not starting. Oh, also, John, this shows again how much better SCs are!

I use a 3M product called strip caulk to seal between my cap and distributor. It's like putty that never hardens like silcon sealer which I tried but would never do again.

Try the 3M Silicon grease. Just a light film. Never hardens .
