cloning experiment...
Attached some pics on the progress of my 72 RS Clone...my friend Mike has been doing all of the body work and creative welding etc..He is the porsche guru
so far: rustfree 72 911t coupe cali car..rear seat area was rusty and repaired some years ago, but we cut out and replaced with another panel..I stripped all sound deadening and coating from interior...we POR'd it and just sprayed a lightweight acoustic damping coating I sourced from a high end audio installer. Rear RS flares, getty duck and f/r bumpers( attached with dzus like fasteners), 911R taillights, custom inset front rsr size oil cooler ( Mike took a rear license panel and made into front cooler panel...pretty trick..pics do not do this justice at this stage) welded in some supports at rear shock tower mounts and around engine compartment (thx TRE) Also mounting my safety devices bolt in, but re-cutting and bending the front bars to convert to later style sill mount uprights. I bt a pair of the lightweight rear hinges from Zeke, but we realized we should not mount with a ducktail, given this car will see some high (125mph+) speeds on the track and in rallies. The color will be mexico blue...the underside and interior will be sprayed with a tinted-to-match coating called amershield (Patrick Motorsports turned me on to it- it is a highly durable coating used to paint industrial buildings/shipping containers etc) Dash pad replaced with fiberglass...this and front of dash will be painted black wrinkle finish like the old racing ferrari sefac 250swb hotrods. guts of car from my 84 euro...tranny rebuilt by gary fairbanks with shorter ratios, sourced from powerhausII, rennshift shifter, engine is euro 3.2 with flowed andial intake, autothority chip and maf (SWONG chip coming after we dyno) 964 cams, ssi's and mb 911r exhaust, already jet hot coated. front boxster brakes, rear carreras...23mm master cyl. Elephant bushes all around.. 21/28 tb's etc etc more to come ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Wow, looks great! I have to tackle the same rear seat area replacement myself. How difficult did that project turn out to be? Did you drill out the spot welds? Or just take a recip saw to it?
Thanks!

Generally I am against cloning. I think it is morally indefensible and socially irresponsible.
However, I make exceptions for the Carrera RS and Sophia Loren. Looking good E. ![]() |

Very nice custom touches. I am thinking your Torsions might be a bit small for the potential???

My euro carrera had 23/31 at 2300 lbs and rattled out fillings I didn't have! After much discussion, and given the usage (road, targa newfoudland and a few de's) I feel this is more than firm enough...besides, I have raced an original 63 289 cobra across most of the tracks in france, with soft transverse leafs...if I can handle that, this should not pose a problem...question; what size were the tb's on the 73 rs lw?

I have 22/30s in a less capable car. The front feels very (too) stiff the rear not so.
Will when you say philosophy where are they gettign the roll control and anti dive/squat. From Shocks and Sway bars?

They're not...their *philosophy* is "let the suspension work"...let it move......
At that point in time ( may be different today)...the Euro's favored soft springs and *maybe* upgraded anti-roll bars...and let the suspension work, like a downhill skier over moguls.... The American *philosophy* of the time was "clamp-em-down-stiff"...which works VERY well on a billiard table smooth race track but is not ideal for a fast touring car ( read...on real roads). - Wil

Elombard:
quite true...it squat pretty severely...ever see the "Faszination" video with"Sideways Stephan" driving the car at the "Ring?.....Amazing. But...also shows you don't "need" stiff springs..... - Wil

Y es I have a couple of racing budies who are opposites, one guy likes soft springs and big roll bars, the other concrete springs and no roll bars, he likes to let the independant suspension do their work. I personally cant stand to feel the car roll to much at the track, but I think it is more forgivving. I am such a rookie I should nto even comment!
