Please explain more. Are just taking the assembly off the car or are you trying to disassemble the headlight itself?

Sometimes they do that. Try twisting rather than pulling. It can take a lot of force, be careful, and apply force with both hands and it should come.

edit: this worked on stock sugar scoop configuration

replacing burned out bulb. I realize these rings have a lip on the top, so lifting from the bottom should release it, but it won't budge......

Hi!

Off the car, or off the assembly?

If off the car, there are two "slots" @ about 4-5 & 7-8 o'clock that you should be able to use as leverage points. I'm in the middle of painting mine, so I just ran into a similar problem. When I stuck a screwdriver into the slot and began to lightly pry, it just popped out. It seems like the lip of the ring holds onto the lip of the fender. I'm not sure if this is 100% right, but it seemed to work for me.

If you're talking about getting the ring separated from the assembly, you need to remove the little wire "springs" on the back of the unit...(you can see the clips in this post by
imcarthur)

H4 trimrings

Anyway, you need to push one of the ends down to release the clip. I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to get it all back together, but I'm hoping the pictures in that post help!!

Anyway, look for the slots, or remove the "springs" and you should be OK.

If I remember to take pics, I'd like to document how to get the clips back in place.

Good luck!

Brad

From what I remember you need to press down on the top to provide more room at the bottom to pull it off, palm on top pressing down and fingers underneath pulling out - hope this helps a little

Use a pick with a 90 degree head on it and stick it in the bolt hole. As you push down on the top and pull that pick from the bottom, it should pop right off.

Good Luck..
