Number Under Dash

What is the number scribbled under the dash? I took the dash out of my '74 911 and found a handwritten number scribbled in yellow grease pencil. Looks to be from the factory. The German "ones" are written like American "sevens".

The number does not match any other on the car. What does it mean??

Thanks.

It's the production number from the assembly line.

Thanks.

Any connection to the VIN number?

Did the VIN number get assigned later in the production of the car?

How did you get the dash out with the windshield in place or is that a new one? Do you know that you normally can't install the dash with the windshield in place unless you car is a '68 or older?

Not sure about the relationship.

Yes you can actually.
Some idiot installed one in my 74 before I took onership.
What they did was cut off the rear strip that attached under the windshield.
I could not believe it. The dash is otherwise perfect.
Some people amaze me.

I believe production numbers actually correspond to the assembly line sequential order. VIN numbers on the otherhand are not sequential to the assembly line. A VIN number is assigned post the production number and is relative to the model, color and special order items.

This car has been a project for many years. I've had the dash and windshield in and out various times.
I took the dash out with the window out.
The replacement dash I've recently acquired will go back in when I have the window out during the overall car paint job scheduled for next month.
I've known about the scribbled number for quite some time, but I thought I would find out more about it before I cover it up for good next month.
Thanks for the help.
