identiying a G50 tranny.
My car is an 87 and the engine is an 88, unknown tranny.
Lately, I have read several posts about pulling off the shift knob. Several people saying that the shift knob on the earlier tranny is just pulled off while the G50 shift knob has a plastic tab to pop and unscrew. I looked at mine shift knob sveral times and can't find any tab on the knob at all. Now I doubt that if mine tranny is a G50 or one of the previous owner adapt in an earlier tranny. Is there a way to make sure what tranny you have? Thanks. Here is a pic of my shift knob/shifter ![]()

Where is reverse on your transmission?
If it's down, all the way to the right, it's not a 87-89 G50. If it's up, all the way to the left, it's a G50 if it's a 5 speed. Your car is a '87, so it should be a G50. If you take a picture of the transmission under the car, it'd be easier to tell than by looking at the shifter. But just looking at the shifter, I can tell that's a G50 shift lever pictured..

KTL,
Thanks. It is 5 speed and the R is to the left most and shifting toward the front. Then I am confused about the "replacing shift knob instruction" in some posts here. Many people said there is a plastic tab, and a screw, to undo the knob. I can't find any tab or screw on the knob though. All leather except the gear map on top. I will take pics on the next oil change. Thanks.

rnln,
I replaced my G50 shifter knob awhile back. The tab they are talking about is on the top of the shifter and contains the shift pattern information. That comes off and reveals a screw that holds the shifter knob in place. This is different than most other knobs I have seen that just screw on and off. These knobs always maintain their position so the pattern is always straight in appearence on the knob. The screw turns, the knob does not. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much. When I hear screw, I automatically look right at the bottom of the knob. Thank you

Basically the top area with the "picture" of the shift pattern....is lifted out of a recess and you'll find the screw underneath. You might need a sharp instrument ( knife?) to help get the top cover off, and it might deform the edges, so be careful.
