backdate planning...SC to 911R...HELP
ok, finally.....I know what I want.....and I mostly blame seeing some extremely rare cars VERY recently. but that's another story for another time.
ok....so I want to backdate my 1978SC. the interior is in very good shape but I need planning and advice with regards to the exterior. i'm stalking the 911R....now how the hell do i get there????? Bob Tilton...this is all your FAULT. ![]() I've researched and come up with very little info as to what EXACTLY the 911R was. i.e. is that single drivers mirror an old 356 mirror? things like that. if anyone can offer their advice or exp......please do speak up. fyi, I have access to a great deal of factory parts. so this is not exactly a pipe dream. I just need to figure out exactly what it is I need/want. anyone have factory R specs? Cheers, Kyle. |

You start by selling it and buying a short wheelbase (up to 1968)
Do a search, there have been quite a few threads on the 911R. Tom |

thanks Tom, I did indeed do a search. since I didn't come across anyone backdating a 911SC to a 911R look......hence the post.

like Tom said.....Not only is the wheelbase different...the flares are different....tons of other differences...fuel filler...qtr glasses, engine lid...bumpers....interior...and the list goes on and on...You could do an RS clone and leave the ducktail off if you wanted...but I am not sure that is the look you are going for....

Don, you are correct. an RS Clone without a ducktail would be a much more viable option. I really also like the look of the 911S in the "early factory lightweight thread"

There are 2 ways you can go for the exterior changes, metal or fiberglass. Metal: buy a long hood, fenders, rear bumper, front bumper, have front slam panel changed. Fiberglass: unbolt old, bolt on new, spend money on fit and finishing FG parts. Ups and downs to both methods depending on light weight or fit and finish being a higher priority. There is also a guy who does a complete FG kit for the conversion, can't think of the company name off hand. Interior: easy way is strip yours out, sell it. Put in an Appbiz RS carpet/door panel kit (or leave it bare metal) and a set of GTS seats. But again, this is more of an RS/ST look, and not necessarily an R. If you truly want an R, buy an early 912 roller and start from the ground up. Keep us posted on what you decide.

ok, got it. then i'll be going for an RS/ST look, not an R. However, I do like some of the details the 911R, tail lights, mirror etc. so i will keep that in mind. also, its likely i will not use a duck tail.
Susinav, I can easily acquire a long hood, non tailed deck lid & fenders in metal. I'm not sure about the bumpers. I could just get FG ones. If I decided to use the old style hood hold downs, I wouldn't have to worry about changing the front slam panel. oh my interior is already done. only thing left is an eventual seat swap & perhaps replacing my cracked dash pad. if a decent one in black ever shows up! thanks for your advice, truly appreciated. Cheers, Kyle. |

You can always just mix and match the details you like. Lots of prople use the R tailights even though their cars aren't R replicas. Why don't you use the front fenders as well. This is my favorite R picture.

Kmatt, with the SC as a starting point, the best alternative is to mix and match the best attributes of early cars to your liking. Take a look at Rob Dickinson's car as inspiration. It's minimalist inside, with bare painted metal; the flares are RS-type, but recut to Rob's taste; he has a centerfill tank, etc., etc. I'm not sure the search feature is working right, but maybe somebody can find a thread or two on Rob's car, or the article on it in Excellence.

Call Dave @ TRE Motorsports, North Hollywood.....I got most of my stuff there. If you don't mind fiberglass repro stuff.
The front hood that allows for the use of the SC latch without ANY cutting was a big plus. ![]() ![]()

Sam, that picture is simply inspiring.
Techweenie, good call. hopefully someone will post something about Rob's car. I'll go thru my library of Excellence mags this weekend. Mike, beautiful work man, great effort. One issue I have is this. I have access to a LOT of factory parts. So....if I can I would like to stick with some of the factory pieces (also cheaper for me). Dave at TRE has the front latching figured out now huh? that's great!!! very tempting. however, i'm positive I can get a factory early decklid, factory fenders, factory long hood. that just leaves the bumpers..... hmmmm. sorry for all the questions, thanks EVERYONE for your help & advice. K. |

This is a recent car that I found while cruising DDK. As you may guess...I really like it. It's a backdated '87 Carrera. ![]() ![]() |

BTW - Rob Dickinson's car is one of the nicest "sans ducktail hot rods". I really like the cars that you have to pause every 2 steps to take in all the "non-original" details.

R style seats
well Kmatts,
we would recommend 2 seat options apart from our Nurburgring seat, the slightly higher Sebring or the tight fiberglass ST.... in any configuration,embroidering,grommets,colors..... with regards Stefan GTS classics 702 353 7175 ![]() ![]() ![]() www.ClassicCarSeats.com |

Backdating
Check out my handywork.
Lots of ways to backdate - theirs the hard way, the harder way etc. I think you US guys have got a better stock of early 911 parts such as front wings , they dont last very long in the UK. not changing the front panel would be a blessing. see my link.. and follow user red964 |

I can help with that if you're serious. I have a set of Stefan's Nurburing seats and just received one of the very first ST seats (that picture above might be my actual seat). The ST will hopefully get installed this weekend. Very nice. PM me if you want to see them in person. Brooke
