1980 911 SC Shifter advice needed
The shifting rod on my 1980 911 SC is able to swivel around (left & right) - this make shifting difficult. Anyone run into this issue and have any advice for what might be wrong and how to fix it?

The common answer is to replace the shift coupler and shift rod bushings.

Yes the shifter bushings (ball cup, shift rod, coupler) need to be replaced.
Not a hard project. I think there is an article and then many threads on this website. Also 101 projects book outlines this. I did this when I first got my P-car. Much improved shifting! Let's see from what I remember, the hardest part was taking apart the coupler. there are threads that describe different techniques from using a press or hammering it out using the support of a proper sized socket. Also use tape and/or a marker to mark off the alignment of the shift coupler and shift rod so you won't have too much trouble with adjustment when it is back together. Have fun!!

Hi jass, I have the same problem, and will be replacing all the bushings over the next couple of weeks. I am also installing the factory SS at the same time (another "whilst you are in there" project!) - I'll let you know who I get on

Please do, Pål. I also have the ball cup, shift rod and a (complete) coupler in a box ready to install. Let us know the pitfalls.

I think jass means the whole shift rod swivels around.
I suspect that the upper part of the shifter has come lose from the lower part. Search for a diagram for the shift housing that shows the details.

The shaft is epoxied into a receptacle and the bottom of the Shift rod. You can either epoxy with JB Weld (or similar) or tack weld into place. Also a good time to do the ball cup and shaft bushing.

Here's a link describing the procedure: Stick shift came loose - what holds it on?

inspect everthing carefully for cracks - some have posted re cracks in/near the epoxy; at the end of the shift tube & etc.
