Question Stick shift came loose - what holds it on?

While trying to remove the knob on the stick shift I managed to break it loose from it's base that goes into the shifter housing. Sooo, I tried to clear RTV but that only held for about 10 seconds. What can I put on this to hold? Can I use JB weld or put a set screw through it? Are these suppose to come out?

Thanks,

Fairly common problem. had it happen to me. The two parts are held together with epoxy. JB weld would work except now that you used RTV you now have silicone all over the two parts which makes for some problems with bonding. You will really need to clean the two pieces before using the JB weld. I have a MIG welder so I just welded the two parts together. If it was me I would go and have it welded. Probably won't cost more than $10 to have it done.

Happened to me as well. I just positioned and placed a couple of tack welds where the base and rod meet. Then a quick coat of paint to protect. This may help as well Shifter alignment: In middle of fixing..Help needed

Might as well do the shifter rod cup and bushing as well. That's what I did.

Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure it did not "need" to come apart. I'll probably get it welded.

I had the same issue. One more vote for JB weld.

And one more. I've never had anything come apart that I JB welded.

All the epoxy's on the planet did not work for me when my shifter stalk came loose. It was finally welded on (Tig) by a friend who placed about three welds around the area the shalk meets the inner shaft. Now its an absolute pleasure.

If you have a welder or easy access to one that's the way to go. A tack on the front and back and you'll never have to worry again.
