Question Turning the Tach with Rev limiter TDC

I would like to see the Rev limit at the top of my Tach, how do I rotate it counter clock wise so I can do this?

Same with Speedo - (I cant see my speed above 6oMPH)

Simply pull it out of the dash and rotate it to the point you like and push it back in. There's only a rubber sleeve holding it in place...

Nope, nothing holding it in. Worst case you might need a screwdriver (very gently) to coax it out.

If you can't get the tach out by pulling on the ring, try taking one of the other gauges out the same way. Then you can reach around and push the tach out.

A more elegant solution would be an AutoMeter mini shift light. It's the size of lipstick and you can dial in the RPM at which the ligth comes on and floods your eyes with orange light. I like it for the track. Very noticeable, I have it set at 6krpm, so I know that I can keep on it a tad bit longer if I have to.

Here's another option: I replaced the OEM tach with a Memory Tach from VDO. You can display the latest, highest RPM reached. It also has a programmable shift light. Black face, 5 inch diam. Looks very similar to OEM. Couldn't see the shift light in the heat of AX competition, so I connected the shift light hot lead to an external buzzer (Radio Shack). Works great. Issues: 9K RPM full scale (kind of high). Must relocate directional indicators and high beam indicator which are in the OEM tach assy (not hard to do, used Radio Shack mini indicators). My car is stock '76 911. I combined this mod with an MSD installation. I have the buzzer programmed to sound 200 RPM before the MSD rev limit kicks in, so I know it's about to happen.

Or you could have NH Speedo do this for you.

rdane:

That's an awesome mod. Looks so clean too. i wonder why the factory hasn't done that. After all, they were smart enough to put it in the center from the first place.

Still, when you are at the track, you will never see your tach - at least I don't look down more than a hand full of times.

I think I have seen P car water pumper tachs that are set up like that, but I may be wrong. (?)

Cheers, George

Rdane,
What is N. Hollywood's usual price for the tach and speedo mods? Looks nice.

I like the mod but I can FEEL it when it (the car) is in it's Power line, unlike the REDLINE which always catches me off guard.

I could feel the engine "die" till I changed cams, now it pulls past the rev limiter and does so very quickly. I ran twisted gauges for a year or so and finally did these. Not for everyone but I like the 12:00 redline, or just a vertical needle, and the speedo so I can see from 0 to 130, where my gearing tops out.

Call me anal but I also like that the needles match up when the car is at idle or close with the motor off.

$180 to rebuild and redial the speedo. $110 to redial and recalibrate the tach last fall.

How does this install? Does it wire to the existing tack or does it get hooked up to the coil? Which model did you buy? Any pics of the install and how it looks now?

It wires to the factory tach, you can splice into the wires. There is a small control box that picks up the signal. You can mount it in the front trunk or under the dash. There are 'beans' that plug into the control box, probably resistors or capacitors. With these you set the rpm that it I will get pics of the install. It is the mini autometer light. It comes in black or silver color. Check www.summitracing.com
