915 side cover
Are the nuts on the ring gear side cover special ?? Pulled my ring gear today ( looking for the slop ) and for awhile could not understand why the cover would not come off..closer inspection what looks like helicoil over one of the studs acting as a nut. looked at all the other nuts and they all have what appears to be a insert or helicoil in them..weird.. and my ring gear say 774 on it good/bad ?

Those are all metal type lock nuts; sometimes called prevailing torque lock nuts.

The ring gear will have 31 teeth. Count the teeth on the pinion gear. Could be 7 or 8. Normally a side cover does not have locking nuts.

thanks- no lock nuts, look std. till ya look close, some kind of helicoil in everyone (one came out ) and was left on the stud impairing my cover removal. I will replace all the nuts,no big deal, just weird.

Three of the five 915 transmissions I've rebuilt/or am rebuilding have these locknuts on the side plate with the metal inserts (wire coils). The use of them appeared to have ended with the SC's. Jim
