88 Cab window stitching opening
Hi All,
On my 88 Cab the stitching on my rear window is starting to open (break). My top is in like new condition and the window is in excellent condition. I asked one top place and they want to take the top off to repair this. I do not want to do this. Is there another way? I have very low mileage on this car and everything is original. Can I use an awl? Thanks Jack 1988 Carrera Cabriolet |

awl? if you mean a curved needle that leather bag/shoe repair guys use, yes. I restiched my 65 mustang top on a pinch. Use nylon thread of the color needed.
Open the top half way to loosen the tension. Be patient and it could be done.

do it all the time
At my shop we do this all the time. Be careful of anyone wanting to take off an old top because sometimes it doesn't or can't go back together. I use a straight needle with the eye at the pointed end on the outside and a curved needle on the inside. Put the thread through the furthest point (always go over farther than you need to to be safe) and insert the thread half in half out. Now take and install the curved needle on the inside half of the thread and the straight needle on the outside of the thread. Now the fun begins. One stitch at a time insert the straight needle until the eye with the thread appears on the inside and insert the curved needle through the loop the thread makes. Remember insert it only on the leading edge(the end that is open) not the back edge loop. If it sounds confusing try it you'll get the hang of it. Remember go slow take your time and use good thread- polyester. Any upholstery shop can sell you a bobbin for 50 cents that will be more than enough.
