now lets see hmmmmmmmmmm! out of 2652 ever produced for 1987, we factor in the following.......crashes into immovable objects, crashes into moving objects, earthquakes-hurricanes-fires, theft, onboard fires, crashes at race tracks, soon to be ex-wives selling for $100 bucks, stuck in barns garages w/blown motors, and we probably have maybe 2000 left still running around! I LIKE THAT..............ALOT!

"Porsche Family Tree", published by PCA...a handy little booklet sold to PCA members, it lists the VINs of each year and model...
For example the VINs of the 1988 end in 17001 thru 2116...
1987 17001-2653. Whoops, looks like I missed one in the earlier post.

Actually that's not a low number by Porsche standards...since I'm early 911S prejudiced, and an early Targa as close as you'll find to a Cab back then...how about the 1972 911S Targa...989 produced, world wide. 1750 911S coupes that year, mine is #1556.

wow dont let my girlfriend see that beautiful green 911! my bank acct has already been seriously wounded by buying mine. incredible car you have. i took her to patrick motorsports website and she fell in love with jims green 911. i have her so well trained she calls me everytime she sees one here in cave creek/carefree az. very small town with not alot of roads, so EVERYONE sees EVERYONE! considering mine is going on 20 yrs young, i figure in the next 10-20yrs there will be alot less of them, no matter what year you have before 1990. and that is good for all of us !

Yup...we need to keep the air cooled cars alive...sad, and all too true: "They don't make 'em anymore."

Charles,

The various numbers quoted above all represent US Cabs only, (including US '89 Speedsters as well) and thus don't answer your original question, as I read it.

Worldwide Cab production (excluding a fair number of 930 Cabs also produced) in '87 totalled 4,202, broken down as follows:

ROW: 1,464 (150001-151464)
Japan: 85 (159501-159585)
US: 2,653 (170001-172653)

Tim, you're sure about that? The figures given on the early (pre 1974) cars are world wide numbers. I'm not saying you're wrong, just wondering what model year PCA began changing from counting world wide production to counting only USA equipped models?

Yes, I'm sure.

I have no idea what criterion a club publication may or may not have used to count pre '74 cars, although Porsche has certainly been using different US v ROW VIN sequences since at least the mid '70's. Differing emission/safety regs of the era would have been the genesis, I would guess.

Okay, I'll read '74 and up VINs with a grain of salt. I do remeber a lot of bad mouthing what were known as "gray market" cars of the late 70's and 80's...
