Question Targa Rear Window & Windshield Removal

Hey Guys,

I searched the forum and was surprised I couldn't find any threads on this.

I am going to be sending my car for body work and painting at the end of this month and want to remove the windshield and rear window to replace the seals. How dificult is this job? I am really worried about cracking the window. Am I better off to go to an auto glass place and get those guys to remove it?

The guy that is doing the paint and bodywrok doesn't have a connection for you to use. I had my windshield replaced a few months back and the guy had the windshield off in less than 3 minutes and back on with the new one in 10. Most of the problem was with my seal. Call an autoglass guy that will come to you and tell him that you just want him to remove the glass and put it back once the bodywork is done. Shouldn't cost you more than a half hour/hour of labor.

I removed all my glass. Not a tough job at all, just take your time. For the rear I just scored the seal to remove the trim. Then made deeper cuts to remove more of the weather stripping. Then, with a helper, I removed the rear window. Just take you time and do not forget the defrost wires - mine were driver side... It comes to a point where you can pull the weather stripping out at a corner, then you know you are almost there.

You have to cut appart the rear seal to remove the rear targa window. Just a fact with these cars.

Back window is very hard to reisntall. It must be pushed in on the sides to get it to fit.

Replacing a rear targa window is said to be extremely difficult. I investigated pulling it on my car to replace the very tired rubber..no one would touch the job. One fellow said he'd do it but it would probably require new glass as he'd be likely to break the original trying to get it in! So be sure you find someone who knows how to replace it before moving forward.

They are harder then the coupe window for sure but with a lubed seal (dish soap) they go in without too much trouble. An experienced installer should not have to cover their butt by making it out to be harder then it really is.
