Shorts - knot

What did he say to get your shorts in such a knot?

Spent a few hours searching for an answer, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-928-technical-forum/538296-worn-distributor-cap-rotor.html is the closest I came but the pics are quite different from mine (and there was no clear answer in the thread, just "when in doubt replace"). I'm wondering if this cap & rotor look too worn? The cap itself looks new, but the black lines at each point just look toasted to me. They're in an '82 SC. Sorry to stray from the Carrera theme, just didn't want to launch a new thread if it wasn't necessary. I'm unsure of their age & don't want to replace if they look normal. Thanks, I'm on a steep learning curve & trying to diagnose hesitation/bucking/surging problems.

From my experience, the pic's above look in pretty good shape.......If they were mine I would not change them.

others may differ ;)

KC, thanks for the quick response. Follow up (long shot) question: I've read in a few threads that the wires coming off the distributor are supposed to connect at a right angle. Is there any reason to think that these new straight wires are suspect?

MAN,..that looks nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I say right angle wouldn't be a "requirement", would it? I would think connectivity conductivity and footprint would be the only prereqs. I couldn't say they're "guilty" just for being "straight".

What dist. is that?

Best,

Doyle

cap/rotor/wires are suspect IMHO - things dont' look right to me... maybe one of the pros can comment. zach - note in the picture above you posted the spark pattern is in the middle of the contact.

Doyle, the distributor is whatever Brumos put in the car before I got it; I always assumed it was oem. Admittedly the angle of the wire was a long shot, but it had been mentioned enough times in other threads, & I've heard of stranger issues complicate CIS.

hcoles, I agree that probably a legible "1" and not a smudge, & while the distributor was never removed the wires were recently replaced (at the shop). Do you think cylinder 1 could be mismarked? The car goes through bouts of running very nicely, then not well at all. Is that possible if the firing order is that far off? Would be great to get a pro opinion to weigh in. Thanks for the responses so far.

Agreed. Looks very normal and in excellent shape. A little carbon is normal and should be of no concern.

I believe that Porsche recommends a change of plugs, cap, rotor, fuel and air filters at 15k. The wires are not a regular change item but finding no bills in the cars records indicating my 25 year old Carrera had ever been changed, (despite the fact that the Berus seemed fine) I changed them out for Magnecors this spring. Cheers

Thanks again for the responses; for $20 I might get a new cap & rotor. Though these look good, they have at least 10k/15k miles on them.
I also rechecked the firing order & confirmed that the lead marked "1" is in fact correct on the dist.
The hesitation really feels electric-related; comes and goes like someone's hitting a switch. Read somewhere else that the rev limiter relay might cause the same problem-has anyone else had experience with this?

Might pull your plugs and see how they look.

Would this be something to consider (for me, that is):

Being anal, and changing the copper-conductive elements quite frequently, I must say that I'm sitting of MANY distributors (maybe 8 or nine) and rotor buttons (as I NEVER throw anything Porsche-related away). On 2 of them, I burnished the carbon buildup areas within the rotor and Progolded it...looks to be nice and almost new again...same was done to the rotor buttons......just wondered about the material wear rate (conductivity distance). I would think it a (relative) non issue, and would consider these 2 "refurbs" as potent "spares".

...not trying to cheap out here, BTW. Just some thoughts to throw out there. This way I keep "spares" that are functioning refurbs vs. always keeping a new one in stock.......

Fuch it,..I ordered a new one today...............for spare. What a whimp.

Best,

Doyle
