Average life span for Carrera distributor cap & rotor, and plug wires
I just checked my distributor cap and found carbon on the terminals after 30,000mi. How do you know when it's time to replace? Rotor doesn't look too worn after same 30,000mi. Wires seem ok, no miss-fires, and have 127,000mi. but how do you know when they are done?

When in any 'doubt' change 'IT' with all that time and wear. The clearence between the rotor and cap could be excessive.

If the wires are stock replace them. The rest of the stuff: plugs, wires, rotor, cap are relatively cheap. I replace mine every winter.

At 30,000 it is time. Rotor is cheap and distributor cap is not what I call cheap but is definitely time to replace. Just good maintenance to replace them. Plugs while your at it...

When I first bought my car Magnacor wires were recommended by Steve at Rennsport, I put them on and have had no issues for 50k miles. Spark plug wires are a thing I like to have the best I can make or find. I change plugs, cap and rotor when I get to the point of not remembering when I did it last. The frequency is changing over time so I can't make a good recommendation. I probably over maintain.

I just replaced mine at 14k miles and said to myself that it looked like it'd be best to replace them at about 10k. I read in Bentley where you can measure the resistance of the rotor and it should be about 1 kohm. I measured mine and it was 1200 ohms so sure enough it was ready to be replaced.

Its the wires I always wonder about, they are not cheap. Every 60k would seem reasonable?

Magnacor wires, on the other hand, seem to eliminate all those problems. Last edited by stlrj; 05-17-2010 at 08:45 PM.. |

A miss is the most common symptom and an ohm meter might be helpful in finding which one has gone bad.

If the ends unscrew, would disassembly and a cleaning be worth one's while?

Personally, I'm all in favor of eliminating all these problems with the installation of your basic, seemingly everlasting, low maintenance, OEM proven, cost effective carbon core ignition cables. ![]() ![]() Cheers, Joe Last edited by stlrj; 05-18-2010 at 09:31 AM.. |
