*( 911 air filter

Just how is one to change the air filter in a 89 911? Doesn't seem to want to be changed.

4 clips, remove airbox cover and filter - replace.

The bottom rear clip is the hardest to reach.

Well it sounds simple enough. We tried and it seems thst the sover hits the engine hinge and the A/C hose plus how do you get your hand to the rear of the box to undo the clips in the rear. Had a hard enough time trying to remove the plugs. Only got two out on that side. Thanks for the help.

If all the clips are undone, then it comes out easily. There are no hinges, so when the clips are undone, the cover lifts about an inch and then slides out.

plus how do you get your hand to the rear of the box to undo the clips in the rear. [/QUOTE]

You just snake your hand back there. I reach over the top with my left arm and down. If you have extremely large arms, it might be difficult, but I am not a small man and I can reach the clips. The bottom rear one is a real b**** though.

Good luck.

The clips *DO* hang up after they're released....these are "hinged" type. You may have to fiddle-fart each clip to get them to "release".

Hint .... after you're done removing the front cover.... consider cutting off the entire face of the front cover except for a 1" wide "band" that includes the reinforcing ribs. Then you'll end up with a clone of the "Cup" airbox. It does a couple of things. It gives you line-of-sight access to the 4 clips, and makes any maintenance like valve adjustment and oil filter changes much easier. A search on this board will give more details.

Agree w/ Wil-I recently did this (had a cone filter in the interim) and I have almost as much access as with the cone, MUCH easier access to the clips, and it looks better than the cone (or the factory snorkel, IMHO).

If you don't want to sacrifice the stock lid, you can buy complete airboxes cheaply enough on the parts board.

Reach in from the left side of the maf and you will get it.
Hopefully your arms are not too short or to big.

Just renewing this thread.

I too am having trouble with this. Do you have to take the AC compressor down to get the last latch off?

No, you should be able to reach all four clips and remove the air filter without removing anything for access.

To get the lower back latch, where do I put my friggin' hand? I can get the top one from the top but can't get close to the lower one. Fat hands I guess.

Imagine your arm is a snake and shove it in there! When your arm hurts and you have not undone the hindge, you are almost there!

Now you know why the dealers charge so much for basic service

I gave up and drove six months with the lower, rear clip undone.

Then I asked my almost anorexic brother and he managed to reach it with his spider arms.

You can remove the plastic intake snorkel that prevents your arm from reaching the clip. It snaps out.

I reach over the top of the motor with my left hand and shove my arm back there until my elbow is past the AFM, and then I can reach down to the clip. Of course, by this time I am essentially laying on top of the motor with at least one foot off the ground, and I do it in a closed garage so the neighbors won't talk.

Great idea. I can get my wife more involved and maybe even get her to like the car!
