993RS Rear Calipers - One for Bill

Bill,

Is it possible to modify a pair of 993RS 'rear' calipers to fit a 911SC rear end whilst still retaining the (911) 8" x 16" Fuchs and SC flares?

Thx

yes,

From left to right, stock 993RS rear, 993RS rear modified for use on the rear of a 911, stock 993RS front

Installed

no, you need 6cm or so clearance to the back of the paddles

Bill,

Looks like the hunt continues for some secondhand 965 rear calipers.

Thx

The 965s are getting scarse, I haven't seen a set in almost a year, sold the last ones I had 2 yrs ago. I tried to talk a guy on Rennlist out of butchering a set a few weeks ago, all he needed was a set of 993 rears but I couldn't talk him out of it

Get some 993 rears, the mods aren't that bad. Use '78 up 930 rotors. I don't know whether those will clear 8s, The 9s will provide plenty of room though.

Hopefuully you already have 993 fronts?

Bill,

Yes, as part of a ' very regretable and expensive' purchase from Dave Walsh at Probraking I still have 993 front calipers and adaptors (a 12 month story).

Unfortunately, Mr Walsh insisted that widening the throat was not an appropriate modification for the rear 993 calipers and last December asked for their return - I have not heard from him since.

Having given up on Probraking, I now need to resolve my rear braking problems on my own and hopefully have just discovered a set of rear 965 calipers.

As a cross check it would be useful if you could let me know what the porsche serial numbers are for the 965 rears.

As usual your expertise is most appreciated.

Thx

Does anyone have pics of the 965 rear units? Is it the same caliper for the 3.3 & 3.6?

Bill,

Using your measurements to mod the 993 rear calipers they will fit inside a 911 8" Fuchs without the need for any spacer.

965 r will look just like 993 r or 964 r

Starting at the top right going clockwise 993RS rear, 965 rear, M rear, A front

965 rear would look like this installed

3.3 and 3.6 965 used the same rear caliper, the 3.3 used a 993/S4 front and the 3.6 used a Big Red front

The throat mods to a 993 rear are not a big deal

this is a close up of a modified throat

Bill:
The modified throat is the area above the mounting bosses/holes which have been beveled; correct?

Just by a small amount, you can see the ss pad holder bolt head is just barely ground

heres what an unmolested one looks like

Bill,
I don't recommend the throat modification just to use 930 rotors just because the pads no longer fit(I know that’s a dumb reason, but hear me out), to me that makes the mod a continuous pain in the A%$ every time you change the pads because you have to take that same amount of width you removed from your caliper throat off every new set of pads you buy. You can't fit a stock 993 rear pad in the caliper over a 930 rotor. I know your thinking, big deal its the rear, I will not need to change pads in the back very often at all. That's a great point, and leads me to my next point. I don't understand why everyone feels they need to use the 930 rear rotor, the 84-89 carrera rotor is plenty of rotor to go around on the rear of the car, and it is the correct size meant to be used with the 993 rear calipers with no throat modification.

If you really want to use a 930 rear rotor then use a caliper that fits it, and was made to use a rotor that wide 965, 993RS, or 930 rear calipers.

Bill V.,

Which rotor is used in the 993rs picture? I'm assuming that if the 993rs is used in the rear, then a 993tt caliper is used in the front. What rotor would be used for that caliper. My sc widebody currently is using 930 front rotors with 993 caliper. I was planning to use 930 rotors for the rear w/ modified 993 calipers, but I really like the rs sizing.

Thanks
sc

Martin,

Have you thought about using a 930 rear caliper? The 930 caliper has to be modified for hole spacing, but so does the 993 caliper anyway. I have 993 front/930 rear calipers and it works fine. A little front biased, but not too bad.

965 Calipers

Please note that I have now reached an amicable settlement with Dave Walsh at Probraking.

Otherwise have just received these 965 rear caliper/adaptors from VCI and plan to install along with the Pro-braking 993 front caliper kit (+ 7" 951 Fuchs) over the next few weeks.
