1984 yellow starter cable only 8V
Hey, i finally finished my rebuild of engine and trans and i am about to start/break in the car. I had not issue with the starter when i parked the car a year ago and now it does not crank. BAT measures over 12V and i get 8V at the yellow wire that starts the solenoid. I took the starter back out and had it tested at local car parts store and it worked fine. I assume the 8V are not enough and i have a bad connection somewhere.
Anybody know where this yellow cable is routed? Where are the connections i should look at? Thanks in advance as always. |

Disconnect it from the starter, now turn on the key, what do you see at the yellow wire?
It is routed from the battery to the ignition switch, to the 14 pin connector at the left hand side connector front of the engine, and then through the engine harness to the starter. A lot of connectors. Did they test the loading on the solenoid?

Good point about testing the solenoid vs the starter motor.
I had this issue. Bad starter solenoid on a starter (Bosch) that was under warranty. The "person" at the parts store tested the starter by bypassing the solenoid terminal. I could not convince this "person" that they were not testing the solenoid which was the actual problem. I had to wait until the next shift arrived at the parts store to have it correctly diagnosed. Not saying this is your issue, but worth considering.

Thanks Yelcab1 for for quick answere. I only checked voltage at the solenoid when the wire was still connected and got 8V. Will check tonight what voltage is without it connected.
They just connected the starter, how do they check loading of the solenoid? |

The red arrow is the solenoid terminal. The blue is the terminal for just the starter.
If the person testing your starter is connecting to the blue terminal he is not testing the solenoid. ![]() You can test it your self using jumper cables from a good battery. Just be careful.

My starter solenoid looks a little different than the one in the picture, its a Bosch reman unit. But yes when tested it was connected to what you have in red, nothing on the blue and the trigger wire to where i connected my yellow.
