headliner replacement

I have a 86 Carrera Coupe and I need to replace the headliner. Anyone have any experience with doing it yourself or any suggestions / hints / advice ?

I have read the article in "101 Projects" , but I am selling the car and feel that the time/money spent would be recovered by making the car this much nicer.

Thanks in advance for guidance !!!

a new headliner is a great idea, especially if the old one is showing obvious wear or maybe yellowing from age or cigarette smoke. i had an upholstery shop do mine..wanted it done right. another benefit is that it helps give a little of that 'new car' odor, which will be desirable when you go to sell..

I did the install myself. The windows need removal. Plenty of hands on pelicanhead experience in search.

If not torn maybe it'll be easier to treat it with a quality leather dye.

Just did mine about a month ago. Car was undergoing a repaint and took the opportunity whilst the windows were out. Ironically the bodyshop guy wouldn't change the headlining (said it would take so much time the cost would be unjustifiable), so I got the car back, minus windows, and did it myself. It's not that bad to replace it, you just need patience, and lots of it. The '101' book's got just about everything you need to know, but I would add that you should have a plentiful supply of those small bulldog clips used to clip wads of paper. They get a good hold of the headliner and you can stretch it nice and tight.

A new headliner makes a huge difference, however I'm not sure if it's going to be worth it in your case, it all depends on how much extra you think you are going to get by replacing it. If you have to pay someone to take out and replace the windows, I doubt it's going to be worth it....unless you do it yourself.

Good luck any way

Here is a link to a post I submitted when I did my headliner.
Interior project b4/during/after

It takes patience, but the end result is worth it.

don..perhaps post pics of your current headliner. it might help to get opinions on whether or not it looks like the expense is justified to get a suitable return on the investment in time and or money..
