oil tank problem

I'm finally getting around to driving my dad's '73 T and sorting out the various small but troubling problems.

Recently, the car has been making a sort of grating, groaning sound that, when scoped turned out to be coming from the oil tank. You can even feel it if you hold your hand on it while the engine is running. I don't think there should be any moving parts in the oil tank, and thought that maybe one of the baffles has come loose.

Has anyone heard of this happening? Is there something else that I don't know about? Can this be repaired or do I need a new tank?

This board has an incredible wealth of knowledge. Certainly someone can give me a clue...

could the gauge level float be scraping the side?

where is the noise coming from?

Hmmm. Could be the float. Best guess I've gotten so far. I'll investigate. Thanks.

I can't really isolate it any further than the oil tank because it only happens when the engine is running and there's a lot of noise in the engine compartment. It is pretty evident from the passenger compartment, but only as to general location (right rear quarter).

Baffle is loose in my '76's oil tank and is jamming the level float. Will likely fix by having the tank cut open.

cerberus1,

Welcome to the Forum.

Particularly when cold there can be noise from the sump tank. There is a lot of moving oil there. This was objectionable to many when the tank was repositioned forward for ’72 only.

Does the noise subside or disappear when hot (180F+)

You can eliminate the oil level sender as an issue by simply temporarily removing it and cover the opening with a homemade cover plate. You can do this without removing the tank from the car. Just make sure you don’t get any dirt in the oil system!

Best,
Grady

Thanks a bunch Grady, much appreciated advice. Do I remember you from Denver? Seems to me you might have had a shop there in the early 80's? Or is oldtimer's disease catching up w/me?

Jim: Does your baffle/float make a lot of noise?

Not that I notice; the baffle is resting against the side of the tank keeping the float from rising above a certain level.
