portable battery packs-anyone use these

Having done some electrical work on my car lately, my battery went dead. My kids gave me a portable battery unit, the kind you can use to start things, for a gift. My question is this, is there anything I need to know before I use it to "jump start" my 86 911, and if so, dangers in using one of these? Thanks for any replay.

Just make sure you hook the leads up correctly!

Should be the same as a regular jump start.

FYI on these battery packs, once they lose their charge they may not come back. The built-in electronics will not allow a charge if they get too low (I'm on my second one). Keep it topped off according to the instructions.

You can also use them to run the beacon for a lap timer at the track.

Thanks guys. It sounds like it should be straightforward. I'll recharge it after I use it and keep it up to snuff.

Some Porsche alternators tend to be on the sensitive side; they don't like to be asked to produce a lot of recharging current.

Better to trickle charge the battery before running it.
