I'm in the process of gathering up all the bits and pieces to put my '69 E back to stock. I thought I had the original 5-speed transmission but looking at the number it is HA something with some other numbers stamped into the case and the seam. There is no 901/ on the seam.
From what I've read on Pelican, it appears to be a convertered 914 tranny. It is a push-type and has the breather on the starter side which is odd since my search here says it should be on the opposite side for a 914 tranny. When running, the gears were smooth and had great ratios but I haven't opened it up to see what's inside. Anyhow, what would be the correct tranny for a 1969 911E? Is it possible to take the innards from this one and put them into the correct case? Thanks,

Ron,
I suspect you are correct based on the HA number. The original casting was probably victim of the “Simplified differential” problem. In ’69 there were two different transmissions – the 901/07 5-speed and like with the aluminum casting or the 901/13 and like with the magnesium casting. It is possible to back-date the ’70-’71 911/01 5-speed to fit the ’69. If you are attempting to get close to original, you should get a “Certificate of Authenticity” from PCNA to find what transmission type your 911E was delivered with. You should partially dissemble your HA transmission and see what is there. This is very easy to do, doesn’t require any special tools and only takes a few gaskets & seals to reassemble. If you find 914 gears, you might consider other options. It might be worthwhile to post WTB on the forums for the proper OE transmission type. It probably will be most economical to get a complete good-used transmission and then rebuild it yourself. It is easy DIY. There is a lot of help on the Forum. It might take more than one to assemble one really good transmission. You really want the original “F” 2nd gear for your ’69 2.0E. Gears AFMSX and shorter (AFKQV or AEIOU) are usually preferable to the original AFMSZ depending on use. Once you know how to do this, you can easily change gears to suit whatever use. Best, Grady

One just sold for $150 on the parts BBS, but that's rare to see them that low in price. The gears are worth more than that.
To answer your question, yes you can more the innards ot another case, but you will need more than a few hand tools. The thickness of the gaskets at the intermediate plate are very important and will vary from case to case. If you don't know what they were, or are moving parts around, you will need some help, me thinks. Maybe not. |

I think jpnovak has Stinky's original tranny... it's from a T, but aren't they the same transmission?

Thanks. Since I'm already replacing the motor with a different 69E (original blew to pieces with a valve through a piston and is NLA) it may not matter much what type I use to match the COA, or would it?
I've never done any transmission work yet but am very handy with tools -- all those gears and ratios look scary though. On the bright side, the tranny probably has the simplified differential fix parts that could be used in an early 901 tranny. If it still matters to get the correct type tranny without the correct engine I do want to match the COA but haven't purchased one yet (need two). For my knowledge and consideration, what would be the more desirable tranny (901/07 or 901/13) and gear set for get up and go street use? Thanks,
