Red Line Oil
I have decided to take the plunge and go with Red Line Oil for my SC. I wanted to double check to see if anyone else is using it at this point. The only reason I'm asking is because the tech support at redline insists that I need to run 10w40, and I would have thought 15w50 would be a better choice. The guy on the phone today swore that the 10w40 would run a few degrees cooler, though I'm assuming that the pressure would be lower. The car has had Mobil 1 15w50 in it for the last 10k miles, but I am swearing off their products after bad resluts in several other cars that I have.
Thanks! --Ryan Miles |

What year car do you have? Where do you live? Do you use it as a daily driver year-round? These things affect the weight you should use.
I use Redline synth for my trans.

10W40 may run cooler in your SC but not neccesarily. Does your SC leak? Are you trying to get it to run cooler? What is your normal service like? City, Highway, Track? I had an SC that ran hot and I ran 10W40, 15W40, and 20W50 synthetics trying to find the coolest temperature. I don't remember any significant difference. I do remember the synthetics would recover quicker. That is, when the engine got hot it cooled off quicker with synthetics vs. mineral oil. I am a big Amsoil fan and they have both 20W50 and 10W40 synthetics. I have used Redline gear lube in the past but never the engine oil. Share some answers to the above questions and we might be able to give you some other opinions. Don

Its an 83 SC with a stock 3.0L engine. I live in Ohio, and I use the car mainly in the hot and cool months. It probably only gets started 5 times when its really cold outside. The guy at Redline knew all this stuff as well. I was just trying to see if there was anyone out there using either weight, and what their results were. As far as my 915 gear box goes, I will be sticking with Swepco which I have had good luck with.

The car leaks, but it is not an issue. I probably get two to three drips on the floor every now and then, but compared to the british cars that I've had, my 911 is sealed really well. I use the car for at least one autocross every summer, and several club drives where the car is run pretty hard on twisty back roads. It does get a little hotter than I would like to see, but it has never crossed the last white mark. The highest I have ever seen it was in a traffic jam on a 100+ degree day. In general I would say that the engine gets regularly used at 90% but it is not abused.

I have used Redline 10W40 in my '86 Carrera for over one year now based on the advise from the Redline tech support. When the time comes I will replace it with the same. I have no regrets (or leaks

Redline Oil

You might want to take a used oil sample of your current Mobil-1 and send it to be analyzed (www.oaitesting.com) and then compare the results with your Redline next season. Used oil analysis is the best way to tell which oil your car likes best. It might be ineteretsing to see how these two compare in your car. Good Luck, Don

Redline has been the main staple for BMW fanatics for many years. See all those BMW running around? Couldn't be all that bad.

I thought oil pressure was a function of the mechanical ability of the oil pump, not the viscosity of the oil. ?

This is what I think I know ..quoting from articles in the past here and there 10/40 is too big a spread for any Eng. ! 20/50 is not because- blah blah blah.. like I said -read all the articles, dont have a lab or bearing tester in my house, have to trust B.A and others on their years of seniority .This applies to reg. oil, not syn. oil
