Air flow and cooler positioning?
I've read here that auxilary oil coolers must be in the air flow to be efficient. Due to my (993) body conversion, I really don't have anywhere "in the flow" to easily mount a cooler. I looked at a buddy's "Carrera" cooler mounted in the wheelwell of his '78SC and, if it weren't for the fan, there sure doesn't appear to be a lot of airflow way up there inside the fender.
Getting to my idea...using longer flex lines, I'd like to mount the same cooler horizontally in the nose of my car. There are a set of horizontal "gills" in the nose, just in front of each wheel, where a Carrera cooler would fit nicely. With a "pusher" fan mounted piggyback, cooler air would be drawn from the dead space in front of the wheel, pushed through the cooler, through the "gills" and down/out toward the road. The high and low pressure areas aren't easy to figure out based on how things look.
If your car is identical to a 993, then the 993 cooler and underbody pieces do a great job of moving air over the coolers. There were a lot of airflow changes with the 964 redesign, which meant the coolers got more air. With a conversion, you'd have to maybe look at some actual 993s and see what's different on yours.

you can increase airflow in the fender with the air scoop sold by pelican, and also if the bumper has a notch cut out of it on the bottom like the carrera. but where you want to mount it sounds like it has good airflow and fan is really only needed for standing still (won't make difference when car is moving).

The highest air pressure zone at the front is in the middle. In that the factory puts their oil coolers in the fender(s) is a result of packaging considerations.
Let's face it, putting oil coolers in the fender is a compromise - there's little air flow in that location w/o modifications. First choice: middle front. 2nd choice: fender(s); but don't forget the fan and the air flow path to the cooler(s). Sherwood |

Thanks for the responses.
I'm not sure how my body kit compares to a 993, as I've never seen the underbelly of one. I'm reserving the center section for a future A/C condenser. As my motor is stock 3.0, I don't think I require "heavy-duty" cooling that a center cooler would offer. Here are pics showing the aforementioned "gills" and the space on top of the gill (where you can see the bottom of the existing trombone cooler). There's enough room in there to camp: ![]() ![]() |
