Do you have a catalytic converter? Mine stunk without - but when I put it back on - it was more tolerable. It used to smoke a little at the traffic light after a hard run through the gears - but again - when I put the cat back on it cleared up and let me drive it for another six-8 months before the rebuild.

Yeah, cat is in place. I only notice the smell on startup and short trips, I assume its oil further assuming gas would come out as a flame (its not a 930 )

Mine was exhaust valve guides - two valves were so worn they were out of spec and had to be replaced. I would wait and start saving your money - you'll need it.
