Question Are Metal Master pads really that bad?

I put some on my stock '84 Carrera last year and have noted that they seem to stop the car just fine but do seem to need more pedal pressure than the last pads I had (which I think were stock). Also, on a very spirited Mulholland run last fall while trying to follow Tyson, Jack, Nostatic, etc, I definitely noticed that the brakes were beginning to fade toward the end.

Is it time for a different brand of pad?

I've had good luck with both the Repco ( Axxis) "Deluxe" and the slightly more aggressive Metalmaster pads. The MM even can work as a mild track pad ( say, dual purpose, including DE).

Maybe you have a dragging caliper or old ( flex portion) brake lines that won't "release" cleanly ??

Actually, IMHO, MetalMasters are very good STREET pads, but they're not a track pad. Continued, heavy use will cause fade (I have been told, I'm not a track guy myself). I've never noticed they required any greater pedal pressure than other street pads, however, dedicated track pads will required additional pressure until they heat up. I think, in this case, you were trying to keep up with a pretty fast (and light weight - a big factor) crowd.

I think Jurid and Ferodo (and probably others) make a street/track combination pad that may be more to your liking, but be aware they may be less "grippy" when cold and more dusty and/or squeal some.

I was working very hard that day. Those guys will make just about anyone look like bad drivers.

I don't know if my brake lines are original or not, but I'll assume they are. I should really do a complete ground-up rebuild of the system.

They are fine street pads, they will need a little more pressure especially cold. The lack of dust more than makes up for that.

You guys do have some big hills out there. If you truely overheated them, then the fluid etc. will also need replacement.

I would try some additional brake cooling as a first step.

A friend of mine club races in his G class 911 and uses nothing but the MM pads. He loves them and his car brakes fantastically. He did experience fade at the end of an enduro but that was an hour long race. The home track here near Omaha does not have hugely long straights so the brakes don't have to work as hard so that makes a difference too.

I use MetalMasters for street and DE I like them because I feel I need to apply more pressure and with the power assist on my 86, that makes them easier for me to control around threshold braking on the track. I have never had fade but I did a total brake refresh, rebuilt calipers, new flexible lines, new hard lines , and a new master cylinder.
That’s with street driving and 3 or 4 DE’s at Blackhawk Farms

Thanks. The only time I've noticed my brakes losing their effectiveness was during that run I mentioned previously. I did manage to turn my disks a nice deep shade of blue that day.

I should probably, at the very least, replace all of my soft brake lines and replace the fluid.

The fluid at very least, Lines aren’t a bad idea ether, I bleed my brakes a lot and change fluid often because of the track use.

MMs are great street pad and with some DEs but no competitive stocl PCA club racer (E,F, G, H etc.) uses them. We use Hawk Blues or Pagids oranges. I found the Performance Friction Golds work well for DEs and street without machining my rotors like the Hawks do. I have them on my 72T. I use MMs on my SC (street only), my son's 924S and my wife's Carrerra. My PCA club racecar gets the Hawk Blues for good reason. YMMV.
