Brake rotor problem
I was doing a bit of agressive driving yesterday ('88 Carrera) and after 10 minutes or so I noticed a rubbing noise coming from the right front corner of the car. This rubbing noise was not loud and it did coincide with the rotation of the wheel.
Today I pulled the tire and had a look at the rotor and it is either warped or something is bent (hub??). The runout was measured to be .0035" TIR and the thickness was .937". Can this issue be solved by simply having the rotor turned, or should it be replaced? Also, I took the measurements by sticking a machinist's magnetic indicator base to the shock absorber housing and rotating the disc by hand. I also measured some play (.006" that I could induce by tugging and pushing on the rotor (laterally). Any ideas on what I should do? Is this car still driveable as-is (until it is fixed)? Thanks, Bob |

Sounds like your wheel bearings. When was the last time they were serviced? If you don't know, it's cheap insurance to install new ones.
Could also be a sticking caliper. Does your car pull to the right when braking? Again, if you don't know when they were serviced last, might as well jump in there and do it now. EDIT: It won't hurt to drive it but I would get it checked ASAP before doing any more aggressive driving.

I went ahead and ordered new bearings, seals , ball joints, caliper rebuild kits, and rotors to freshen up the front end. Looks like this weekend has just been spoken for :-). What is the best way to get the bearing cap off (cap that covers the spindle nut)?
Thanks, Bob |

Does the 88 have a nut on the dust cap? If not, then you can use the Channel locks. If it does then you need to use a different technique. I don;t recall the technique, though. DOH!!!!
