cost to replace pulley oil seal?
Hi Guys, I am about to be reunited with the targa after nearly 3 yrs absence
![]() I have been told the puddle of oil which is appearing under the car is largely due to a 'pully seal' leaking and needing replacing? - Does this sound possible? - Any ideas on time for labour to replace? - how much dismantling necc. to accomplish this? I would attack this myself but I am 'chomping' to get back in the saddle and drive the hell out of her! and would rather pay and have it done quickly and a right 1st time! She is in need of some TLC after being in storage fr so long (am sure she is feeling unloved!!!) Thanks for any help Rgds Ben

Ben, the job will take you about 2 hours time and $9.75 Pulley Seal. It requires a partial engine drop which is not hard at all.
I don't know how much a shop would cost for labor, but if you do it yourself we can walk you through it. Good luck, David

Wow- thanks David
I was expecting a full engine drop! I currently have a basic tool bag! but fully intend to buy a decent tool kit when I am reunited with the targa- If it really is that simple, I will attempt it myself. The guys here really helped me out 3-4 years ago with my '86ragtop' really saved my sanity and budget!. I will try and get the seal before I head back to Europe and post again when I am ready for the surgery! Kind regards Ben

I think that is almost as likely to be a leak around #8 bearing as the pulley seal itself.

Ben, it is the exact same procedure. I had a leak at the number 8 nose bearing and used a product called "Dow Corning 730" to seal it. It worked like a charm. Search the archives under "DavidI" and "Nose Bearing Leak" and you should see my write up.
Let us know, David
