Anyone speak German?

I bought some old (1972) porsche repair documents and found one written in German. It contains two graphs.

One is labled "Unterdruckverstellinie" with "Unterdruck mmHg" on the X axis and "Grad-Verteilerwinkel" on the Y axis.

The second is labled "Fliehkraftverstellinie" with "n-Verteiler" on the X axis and "Grad-Verteilerwinkel" on the Y axis.

According to the German/English dictionary I found on the web, "Verteiler" means "distributor" and "Unterdruck" means "under-inflation." The other words (phrases) did not get a match in the dictionary.

I'm thinking that these are the advance and retard graphs for the distributor. Think I'm close? My scanner broke or I'd post a scan.

Winkel = angle

And mmHg is millimeters of mercury.

760 mm Hg = 1 atmosphere = 14.7 lbs/sq. inch at sea level.

"Unterdruckverstellinie" and "Fliehkraftverstellinie" refer to the curve for each on the chart. (Linie = Line, in this case the actual line drawn on the chart) ...

as to which is used for advance and which is used for retard i'm not sure, "Unterdruckverstellinie" is obviously driven by vacuum while i would assume "Fliehkraftverstellinie" is driven mechanically by centrifugal force ...

Unterdruckverstellinie = Vacuum advance curve
Fliehkraftverstellinie = Mechanical advance curve

Grad=degree
Verteiler=distributor
Winkel=angle

Grad-Verteilerwinkel = advance in degrees

Hello

"Unterdruck means vacuum" is almost correct, as i understand with my limited German
Unter = Under
Druck = Pressure

Therfore Unterdruck means Underpressure ( relative to 1 atmosphere or 1 Barg) hence Vacuum.

I think Babelfish needs a few "tweaks" before it puts any translators out of business. When I typed in "Unterdruckverstellinie" and asked for an English translation I got:

"Unterdruckverstellinie"

that's because we germans love to clump a bunch of words into one. the bablefish engine couldn't find a exact match for the word, so it simply returned your input.

if you had split it up into it's original 3 words

Unterdruck
verstell
linie

you would have gotten "Negative pressure adjust line" which is actually a pretty good translation ...

just take "Fahrvergnügen" which losely translated means "the joy you get out of driving a car" ...

why waste a whole sentence when you can get it all squeezed into one word!

You guys were right on. Here are the same graphs out of the 1972 Factory Workshop Manual. Slightly different scales are used, but the information is the same. Thanks. This wasn't some secret German formula I've been missing all these years!
