where is my brain?

All right, where in the heck is my cruise control brain? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Also, does anyone have a pic of the wire harness that plugs into it, I'd like to find that too. I think my cars had a brainectomy, though I'm not sure. It is an 86 Targa. Thanks for any input

nothing there, nothing under radio, nothing next to booster in trunk

please help! I have a new (used) brain to try for my cruise, if I can find the wiring for the old one. Does anyone have a pic of where the OE cruise computer location for an 86?

Should be under your dash, right by the radio.

Tim Hancock 04-11-2006 09:44 AM

Well in my '79 SC it is attached to my right ankle. (sorry, couldn't resist!)

If it isn't right under your radio then it is missing or has been relocated.

jeff1hughes 04-12-2006 08:34 AM

what color is the harness conector? or even the wires that make up the harness. I have found a number of cut wires in the radio area, I assumed they were all from the OE radio/amp/speaker fader. Does anyone have a pic of the connector and or a diagram of the wires that go into the connector?

MORGANR770 04-13-2006 11:06 AM

On my '85 it was located behind the access panel on the driver's side near the windsheild wiper motor. Take the access panel off and you will most likely spot it right away. Someone decribed it to me as being about the size and shape of an 8 track tape. About right.

According to the Bentley manual, for an 86 it would be in the trunk where morganr770 described it. For 87 and later, it was moved to the interior directly under the radio.

However, my car has a build date of 6/20/86 and is among the last of the 86's built, and it has it inside under the radio like the 87 and later cars.

thanks Dave. I don't see any rogue wires under the dash anywhere, but just in case, where do the cruise wires originate from in your car? Through the front firewall, or up from the floor?

Jeff,

The connector is probably black and should fit over the end of the "brain." Take a look at the used brain that you have and get an idea of the connector size from the pins on the end. The wires are as follows:

1 not used
2 brown
3 white
4 not used
5 (2) black
6 black/yellow
7 grey/brown
8 brown
9 yellow
10 blue
11 black/ brown
12 brown

The numbers refer to the pin assignments and all of the wires are .5mm. Try tracing the wires from your cruise control switch to the brain connector.

As another data point; my '86 targa was built in 4/86 (#1521) and has the control unit under the radio.

Hope you find it,
JR
