New windshield- 911 or 964 seal?

Ordering parts today so need help quick!

I've ordered a 911 windshield- should I go with a 911 or 964 seal? I'm not worried about looking original, just working well and potentially eliminating the metal trim piece.

Thanks!

You have to use the old seal with the old windshield and vice versa. I don't think you can use a "964" seal with a "911" windshield. The windshields are slightly different. The only "constant" is the windshield opening in the car, but even that is disputed sometimes...

I don't think the 964 windshield seal will work another Pelican told me that the 964 windshield is thicker the the 911 windshield so if you use the 964 seal it will leak.

Ok, so I'd have to go with a 964 windshield as well. Bummer. The 964 glass is about $300 more.

I think I'll stick with the 911 stuff unless anyone has additional insight.

Thanks guys!

I bought a 964 gasket, intending to use it on my '87 windshield. The seal fit very loosely around the glass. So I had to buy the 911 gasket instead and forget the 964 gasket idea.

The 911 windsheild is smaller than a 964.
The opening in a 964 is larger.

Clarifying Question

To further this discussion (because I'm about to attempt the mod in my '88), what I've seen in several threads on topic is that the actual opening for the pre-964s and the 964s is the exact same size. It's the pinch weld AROUND the opening that increased in size from about 10 mm to about 15 mm, necessitating the new gasket/glass.

So, as I understand it, a 964 windshield with a 964 gasket will work fine in a pre-964 car.

Has anyone had real world experience to the contrary? I'm about to pull the trigger on the glass purchase.

Thanks,

1984 Carrera windshield fitment problem revisited...

Windshield gasket, replace '86 with 964 style?

It'd be best to buy the 964 glass. Like I said, the 964 seal on my glass was WAY too loose. Just buy the 964 windshield and you'll have no worries.

Thanks Kevin,

That confirms what I thought I had read. Oddly, with all the talk on the subject, there are no pictures on the site I could find with 964 front glass and seal installed in a pre-964 911....

All of the last '89 3.2 Carrera's built after mid-October '88 came from the factory with the 964 glass and trimless 964 seals, front and rear, if you really need an example of what it looks like.
