Hood Fallin' On Your Head? My Fix.
Hey I was on a roll tonight so I just kept going (see the CIS Hard Cold Start thread).
My GT2 tail is very heavy, too heavy for one old shock to hold up. I tried the dual shock setup and found it pulled so hard on the one corner of the decklid that it was warping it up and looked uneven. So I figure this needs to be balanced out. With about $5 worth of hardware I put in a second shock where it needs to be. Now my hood closes even and opens easy. No more hood getting stuck shut. (I'll paint it later, once everything is proven worthy to stay put) ![]() ![]()

What about the hard penis looking thing that keeps poking me while bending over the engine? Did I just say that?

I've often said the dual-shock arrangement on the driver's side is a "kludge" fix and should be avoided...for the reasons stated here.
Most cars already have the brackets installed on the firewall side. To do a real nice "factory" look...you can use a mating right side hinge from a Turbo to complete the picture..... - Wil

Great work....My 9-iron in the trunk looks easier though.
Hey I passed though Huntsville last Saturday. Made a quick pass though the Wheels and Keels drive in Nashville. Then on to the GA Porsche race club at Road Atlanta.

Zeke, Rarly's bracket mimics the turbo's bracket and it provides even upward pressure as it opens and closes. However, as Wil says, the factory turbo bracket performs the same job. However, if someone wants a simpler solution, there's always the support tube method (no gas to leak, no gas strut to replace: ![]() I think Pelican carries these now (or at least the trunk version). The problem with those hard struts is that they dont support a whole lot of weight. I have one and it will not support my turbo tail without the support of the gas shock along with it.

I figure anyone with the minimal ability needed to install an "L" bracket and drill a few holes doesn't need a kit, and those lacking that ability wouldn't know what to do with one anyway.
I also found out with my 930 Air Filter "kit" that nobody wanted to pay for one, even at $25. They wanted the part numbers. Hey, this ain't Rocket Science (and beleive you me when you live in Huntsville you get to know what Rocket Science really is) so I gave out the part numbers. I still get e-mails wanting those part numbers. So here you go. Ready? The "L" bracket is the glide hinge for a pocket door, the bolts are 6mm locating and 10mm fixed with nylon nuts and washers for ease of shock movement. Hinge plate is 1/4" aluminum with 10mm holes for adjusting the 6mm locating bolts (so both sides line up evenly). That's it. Cost about $5 and 30 minutes or so. Works fantastic so far.

Don't have a pic, but before I bought a Turbo right hinge for about $30 from another Pelican, I enlarged the hole in the bottom of the "goosenech" of the right hinge in my 84 and put in a hardened bolt and double locking nuts with a strut from Pep Boys to the existing right side strut mount on the firewall. Worked great, had to try several sizes of strut, but none opened up the deck lid completely, about 90% open. I ended up replacing with the Turbo right hinge because it looked to me that if the hardened bolt sheared (not likely) it would allow the strut to jam through the deck lid A/C condensor. I think that may be why Porsche didn't go for that design.

I kinda wondered about your orientation as well Austin, wasn't painting a pretty picture. Glad you cleared that up.
That hood latch "penis" has torn my skull a few times as well. I very seriously thought about throwing the SOB in the can and adding hood pins.

Here's my fix, made from nylon. I just clip it on the strut rod when I'm doing any work.
I'm going to add a velcro strip or a cable to store it near the strut. Last edited by Porsche_monkey; 04-07-2006 at 08:52 AM.. |
