930 sanity check

Assuming that both cars are in comparable condition both bone stock and super clean with equivalent PPI's

'87 with 65,000 miles
'86 with 35,000 miles

What premium, if any would you place on one vehicle over the other.

This is just a test.....

Yasir,

I'm following this closely as it may have a big affect on my eventual purchase decision. So are you being serious or sarcastic? Or I guess the third option is that my wife is putting you up to this just to further mess with my head..........

Psychic, no. Have been called psychotic on occasion.

Jyst out of curiosity, what's the difference on the asking prices?

Well if we go purely on asking prices the '86 is asking about $4K more than the '87.

Now here's the fun part. I've talked price with the '86 owner and he will come down $3K.

While I've yet to talk price with the '87 owner I doubt that he will come down much at all probably less than $2k but again I don't know that for sure yet.

So my guess would be that I could get the '86 for just $3K more than the '87 owner is willing to sell for. To me that seems like a no brainer.

However, for this exercise, I'm trying to figure out just how low the '87 would have to sell for before that becomes the more attractive proposition.

Buy the '86. It has pretty close to half the miles. For $3k difference, I wouldn't think twice.

As long as the '86 doesn't leak oil, I'd lean towards that. $1000 more for half the miles.

In a turbo - the miles mean twice as much - go for the lower mileage - assuming no other mods (like adjustable boost control, 1 bar spring, etc ) that would definitely effect my purchase.

I agree. As long as the '86 rings your bell, I'd go for it.

I guess what I was saying is that at a difference of $3k (his numbers, if the guy on the "87 came down a couple grand, as mentioned in his post) I'd buy the '86 in a heartbeat. I'd pay $5k more for the '86, as evidenced by my first post. In the long run, he's much better off, for a couple of reasons.

Having said that, no two cars will really be equal and it takes a fair amount of digging to really evaluate a car for sale. I spend as much time in learning about the owner as I do the car. There is a really nice looking black 930 here in Tulsa that is owned by a guy that loves Porsches and if you looked at the car, it would be a 9.9 out of 10, in anyone's eyes. The problem is, he drives the living crap out of it, so I wouldn't own it on a bet. I've seen him redline it in first gear, less than half a minute after starting it.

Caveat emptor,

JR

That sure is low milage for an 86, even if Grandma drove it only to church on Sunday. I'd sure want to verify that was correct, optimally with complete service records.
