Has Anybody Put Electric Fans on A/C Condensor?

Has anyone tried putting electric fans on the condensor located on the deck lid? I was thinking of putting three or two 8" fans on the condensor. I have a carrera tail with room inside to put fans as it seems that clearence may not be available between the condensor and the Air Filter Box.

I would think that this would help. I am currently in search of small diameter, low clearance fans.

I would like to install them to see if I can get my AC any cooler. Out here in Tucson, with regular trips to Phoenix I am reminded of how much my 911 AC systems blows.....or don't blow.

Also maybe some high power fan for the Front Condensor.

I have this fan,

under my condenser right now.

I'm now looking at this fan for above the condenser, under the grill of the wing,

Wow, those fans look perfect and they are cheap as hell. I will have to order those for sure.

Did you notice a difference by using the fan? I would I think that there has to be a difference.

Is your goal to use both, below and above?

Used a couple of fans on my condensor a few years ago. Not much difference unless you are stuck in traffic all the time.

Ya, what he said.
The problem is the small fans don't move enough air, CFM's.
One time I check the temp coming out of the fan, 150 deg F.
The other side of the condenser w/ out a fan was 220 deg F.

An 8" x 1.5 " thick muffin fan will move 288 CFM at a cost of 2.5 amps of 12 volt power. Compared to how little air the engine fan moves at idle while creeping through traffic, auxilliary fans can keep the A/C condenser working. They can be turned on and off using a temperature switch mounted on the condenser or through the use of a "trinary" refrigerant pressure switch mounted between the compressor and the first condenser (usually the deck lid condenser). Trinary switches have a third set of contacts that close at an intermediate but still high refrigerant pressure usually caused by inadeqauate air flow over the condenser. Do not be tempted to tap directly into the compressor clutch wire for power for the fans. Doing this can overload and burnup the A/C control switch up front in the cab. Instead, add a relay mounted on the engine electrical chassis, tap into the clutch wire for the relay signal and obtain power from elsewhere. Jim

I am looking to do this as well. I have a MAF in my 87 Carrera so the airbox is not in the way. I wonder if I could fit 2 of those 6.75 inch fans across the condenser - the problem is clearance of course.

I'm in the process of installing an auxilary condenser in my front left fender. I'm using a Spal fan. They're set up for use in cars, and are pretty robust. Spal's website is here. This vendor seems to have good pricing, and a good selection.

I'm also toying with the idea of adding a fan to my rear condesner, but I'm waiting to see the results after I finish the front condenser project.

I don,t have experience with the rotron that was shown, on a/c
condensors but I have been using an identical unit behind the oil
cooler on my 87 slant nose carrera cabriolet, in fact I sold 108 of them last year on ebay to fellow porsche owners. I have a mocal cooler mounted in the right rear brake cooling duct with the fan behind it.

Buy a spal pull or push fan. I have the 6.5 inch pull fan mounted on my saab's IC and it flows close to 500 cfm.

I just replaced the OEM fan on front condenser; however their is no current from the new relay in the smugglers box that works off the AC switch in the cabin. Well, nuts to splicing in new wires and taking a chance on the motor overworking even on the highway.
I simply am going to connec the fan to the battery with a 7 amp in-line fuse and run the wires into the cabin with a toggle switch and light so I can manually turn the fan on in bumper to bumper traffic. I probably will keep it near the handbrake area.

When fall arrives I take it off and go for it again next summer.
A Rube Goldberg set up, but nonetheless I drive little in bumper to bumper traffice here and I had to have that fan constantly going if wired correctly to the AC switch as the wiring diagram indicates.

I have two 10 inches a/c electric fans installed in the Carrera tail of my 911 Porsche. My brother 911 Carrera have the same installation. My car have Weber carburetors with K&N Filter with watershiel plates and the other 911 have K-Jetronic fuel injection system. There is a lot of difference in engine operating temperature during stop & go traffic or heavy traffic. The fans also help to reduce the a/c system pressures that means better cold. To acomodate the fans you need to fabricate a mounting base. I made it from aluminum stripe pieces. Is one inche width and if I'm correct is like 8 inches long. Meassure to be correct. Don't use the electric fans for radiators or oil coolers because dont push too much cfm like the a/c fans. Also you will need to reverse the polarity to make the fans to push air into the engine compartment. Bue a 12V relay and make the connection. You can activate the relay with the compressor or install a switch in the dash to turn on the fans. Is so easy doing that so tri it.

Actually you only need to run the fan(s) when the compressor is running and not all the time. If you look at how the factory set up the front condensor fan, you will see that the fan is only running when the compressor is engage. You may get a little bit of benefit by running the fan consstantly, but like any mechanical device, the more you run it the sooner it's gonna break.

In addition to reversing the polarity you need to reverse the way the fan is mounted to the motor.

Resurrected this thread cause its getting warm. I put a Carrera tail on my car a few months ago and want to stick some electric fans inside the tail above the decklid condensor. I see that there is only about a 6 inch wide opening and you may not be able to put the fan all the way to the top of the open grill area and get the condensor to mount back. Question, should I install 4-43/4" 1-1/2" thick muffin fans where the entire fan is unobstructed (i.e., mounts right on the top side of the condensor with wire ties) or install an 8" diameter fan with a bracket where the tips of the fan don't align over the opening. Does that make sense? With the 8" fan, the tips of the fan (where the air movement is really created) would be exposed, but on the exhaust side (condensor side) would be partially covered.

Hugh: Check out Spal's website. They have motorcylce fans ranging in size from 4" to 7.5". They'll fit better, and be much more durable than a computer cooling fan.
