Mounting an 'MK' 911R Exhaust.

Hey everyone,

My fresh 2.4S engine is finally installed and I have to choose which exhaust I am going to go with so that I can mount the bumper and make the appropriate cuts in the bumber if need be. My choice is a stock muffler or a 911R muffler that I bought from Ben. (MB911)

My question: Do I have to use the support straps for the 911R muffler as it is very light and seems to be easily supported and stable by the 4 bolts that attach it to the headers?

I see many of these exhausts don't have the mounting straps...will this be ok under full engine load and over time?

Thanks.

i would think that if megaphones require a bracket to support them then even a lighter muffler should still use the straps. i'm not sure however.

Is it just the picture, or is it not square on the car?

Cheers

Gestalt is right, you are going to want the straps. There is no reason not to. You have to think about the weight transfer everytime you get on and off the gas and how that stresses the flanges and bolts over time.

Hey Guys,

Thank you for the confirmation...I will get the straps on one way or another.

Yes Jeff - it is not square? Not sure why but I will be looking at it much closer tonight to figure out why.

Thank you all for the feedback...much appreciated!!

I had the same problem. I thought it was my HE's. I didn't use a strap, Ben hadn't made a proper mount yet. Trying to tie the thing to the factory muffler mount was silly.

I think MK has an adaptor or something now. IMO, it would be good to support the can.

Do a search under muffler clamp and user DW SD, I found some very nice stainless steel straps from mcmaster.com . I think I detailed the product in a post. They are cheaper and nicer than the factory. I opted for stainless strapping material and yellow zinc plated hardware.

Ben sells them, too, I think. There should be two mounts for the straps on the rear engine console and you just wrap the clamps around and tighten. I think the diameter of the clamps was 6" or thereabouts.

Thanks Milt & Doug.

Milt it is my HE's...Once I get the bumper on it will be less noticeable but I don't think there is much I can do about it.

I tried to use the clamps from the stock muffler but it is obvious that that is not the right solution...I will source out the straps as per your suggestion Doug - Thanks.

It sounds unbelievable...a very aggressive rumble. I have yet to open it up as I am just in the early process of breaking in this motor...All I can say is I was grinning from ear to ear when I heard it and my wife thinks it is obnoxious and doesn't 'get it'...It's awesome...!

That said it is a little on the loud side but I am OK with that...

You also can use large stainless steel band clamps available from Lowes or Home Depot, cheap and readilly available. I've had them on for about a year now and I check them from time to time and they are always tight and seem to be holding up fine.

You'll probabbly want to modify the bracket that the straps attach to. I've never used one of Ben's mufflers but other aftermarket mufflers are shaped differently than the stock ones and usually don't have the lip at the horizontal seam that the factory bracket is designed to support. If there is another bracket now available, as Zeke suggested, I'd buy it. If not, half an hour with a vise and a few metal forming hammers and you can adapt what you have.

Is your 2.4L MFI?
If so will that muffler work with it?

Here's a sample. Note, I modified the muffler mount on the console side, just by bending to fit the muffler a bit better. Ben's muffler has the crease in it specifically for that purpose.

When I determined the sizing of the clamps, I used zip ties and tightened as much as I could. Then, I cut it off and measured the length. I then ordered the clamp from mcmaster which fit my application. Ben's muffler's all have same diameter core diameter.

Home depot has some large clamps, but they are not stainless and not as nice, period.

The clamps were about $6 ea, not a fortune.

Thanks Doug - The pictures help! I will follow your lead and get this setup.

RarlyL8: Yes, my motor is a 2.4L MFI...this muffler seems work with no issues...I have yet to test it out throughout the complete power band but so far, so good.

Thanks.
