Replace G-50 clutch with rubber centre or spring?
I know this has been discussed several times in the past, but I'm looking at this from a slightly different slant.
I may be replacing my '87's clutch soon; it works fine now but I was told by a reliable source that it is nearing the end of it's life "I can feel the way it engages right near the top and fairly quickly". Besides, it is the original rubber centred one so I'm a little worried that it could come apart at any time (just over 100,000 kms on it). So my choices are a replacement rubber centred one or a spring centre one. I'm thinking of changing to the spring one for a couple reasons. One, it is a little cheaper, two, I wouldn't worry about it coming apart later (though I think the new ones are improved in that respect). The other reason is then I can have the flywheel machined to clean it up, which I think is a good idea no matter what it looks like. From what I understand you can't/shouldn't machine a G-50 flywheel. So my question is this: has anyone changed to a spring centred clutch, from a rubber centred one, and regretted it for any reason? I barely get any gear rattle now, only if I really let it bog while starting out from a stop. TIA, Rick ps. "centre" is how we spell it up here ![]() |

Don't concern yourself about switching to the spring-centred disc. It's a tried and true design. I'd bet you won't notice a difference. I sure didn't notice anything adverse.
You also make a good point about the flywheel resurfacing. It's not that a G50 flywheel can not be resurfaced. It's that it should not be resurfaced if using a rubber centred disc. Reason being is that the clearance between the clutch housing and the disc is reduced when you resurface the flywheel. The reduced clearance can cause contact between the clutch housing and big honkin' rubber damper on the disc. This is a non-issue with the spring disc since there is no big rubber damper attached to it- the springs are the damper. The gear rattle is supposedly the clutch housing making noise. G50's can be kinda noisy sometimes.
