So what do the experts see?

I think:
Reverse is chipped(how???)
#1 syncro can be flipped
#1-#2 slider can be filed
#2 syncro needs replaced.

The lint is from my initial cleaning rags.

take a bunch of pics of each issue, from different distances and lighting, then pull them up on you computer and pick out the ones in focus and try again. try no flash in outside light.

John, I will try that tommorow, do you see any problems with anything shown? Also are the markings on the brake bands normal(not scratches, smooth)?

the 3/4 sleeve is chewed, and a couple of pressed on syncro teeth look kind of blunted. hard to see the rest. polished surfaces or areas of missing friction surface denote worn syncros. you should replace them all anyway, as well as the 1/2 shift sleeve and both 1st and 2nd pressed on teeth among other things.

the slider is chewed, and 2nd dog teeth look worn. but you should replace 1st and 2nd teeth anyway because they are old and they both tend to shed teeth. safer to start new. you have the old style symetrical teeth on 1st, and the matching slider. i would suggest updating to the assymetrical teeth and slider, and new style brake bands, dogs and anchors in both 1st and 2nd. they shift better. the reverse gear will probably be ok with the small chip. they don't get a lot of stress.

John,

Could you post some pics of new sliders, dogs, etc? I could not find any, and it would be a good resource for others that come along.

Thanks,
D

Upgrading to the newer style 1st (asymetric) requires the newer "guide sleeve" as well. That's the 3 pronged thingy that mounts on the shaft that the slider or shift sleeve slides on. I call it the "Klingon Throwing Star" but that term is not in general use.
A couple of years ago I had to pull apart a transmission I'd updated to replace the guide sleeve because I hadn't realized the width of the guide sleeve (and corresponding slot in the shift sleeve/"slider") was different. Very embarrasing.

Are these helpful/clear enough? New 915 1st gear asymmetrical synchro hub (dogteeth). I also have the 1/2 slider, spider, synchro rings and brake bands.

Jim,

Thanks for the photos, now I understand what the asymmetricity refers to.

Good info in this thread!
I will want to update to the assymmetrical style as well.
Is the above mentioned parts the complete list for this?
If so, could you please give the corresponding part numbers for the update or are they all already mentioned in the pictures above?

Thanks in advance,
Walter
