Rust-O-Leum 7777
Is this ( #7777 , rattle-can) the proper Rust-O-Leum for the semi-gloss black look of a Fuchs center...... Man, it looks awfully close ! .... anyone know for sure ??

Yes, the Rustoleum 7777 Satin Black is perfect for Fuch centers and also works well on refinishing black anodized window trim. It is durable and tough paint, but it takes about 8 hours to dry completely. |
Here's a picture of a Fuchs wheel I painted with Rustoleum 7777 about five years previously. It has held up quite well.
I recently sold the car to my brother, and we are going to repaint the centers using Rustoleum Semi-gloss Black this time, as he wants a little glossier than stock finish to compliment the polished rims. I used Rustoleum Satin Black as well and am pleased with the results.

I've used it for years. My old '77 Targa was the first year of the black bar, IIRC, and it needed painting. The satin black was perfect. However, Targa bars have a little texture to them and a spray can is OK. I don't get an Al Reed finish out of a can.

Once it is sunny out and can get a better photo I will send one with them mounted on the car they look much better than these photos indicate.

What did you use to clean up the unpainted portion of the wheel?

Mothers aluminum polish and elbow grease....took me about 15-20 minutes a wheel....Just did a quickie clean up...nothing elaborate

Maybe a stupid question, but does this Rustoleum #7777 match also apply to the Fuchs (albeit excepting the petals) from early Pcars? The original Fuchs from my 73.5 could use some tlc. I assume that this diy fix would not preclude a job by Weidman or Reed in the future. Thanks.

I think the "Satin" black applies equally well to all eras of the Fuchs wheel where black was used for a portion of the center.

Thanks for the pics of the semi-gloss...looks really nice... I'm torn...maybe like others... in that this isn't the "original" look, but in many ways it looks "cleaner" and the sharp curve of the petals along their length throws off a "white line" shine that looks clean and shows-off the shape and contour of the petals/spokes better.... actually a very nice effect. My dilemma ( votes on this , maybe?).... applied to an 85 Carrera...obviously a bumper-car: - satin black? - semi-gloss black? - Economy RSR ? For clarity..car also has "turbo" spats in front of the rear wheel wells..if it matters. Car paint is S7/936 Silver Metallic. I really like the RSR finish but a part of me says you need really deep/wide Fuchs and a wide body to pull the "look" off on a mid 80's Carrera. That proll'y leaves the two black finishes...?? Thoughts? - Wil |

What did you use to paint the lug nuts? I had my tyres changed and I asked them to remove the lug nuts by hand. Of course they used an air gun and of course because the car was an 88 they said that is was age and my problem. I now want to repaint them

Lug nut painting: Soak them in lacquer thinner to get the crud off, blow dry inside and out with compressed air, smooth with 320-400 grit sandpaper and then with a gray Scotchbrite pad, lightly prime with Rustoleum gray automotive primer, and spray two light coats of Rustoleum 7777 Satin Black. Let dry for at least 24 hours. And make sure you use a "soft socket" with a plastic insert to install/remove them.
They will look like new and will hold up very well. Just make sure not to lay the paint on too thick as it will chip off more readily if you do. |
Make sure that you do NOT paint the mating surfaces of either the lug nut or the seat on the wheel where they meet.
Nut torque is not be reliable if one or both surfaces is painted. They should both be bare metal. |
