Barn Find question...
I found a 911T in a barn (actually a hangar):
![]() ![]() ![]() Question: Now what? I don't have any use for it, but would hate to see it sit there and rot, when somebody could fix it up and enjoy it. Apparently it hasn't moved in a while- it does have a license plate so maybe I should get hold of the owner and ask what the deal is? Thoughts/suggestions appreciated. Cheers, Paul.

NE Oregon is a pretty dry climate, and the car is under cover. It will last for a long time, unless rust is already chewing away (Pretty likely).
I have a Porsche sitting in a hangar. I suppose your best bet is to stick a note under the windshield wiper asking for info. |

Does not cost anything to ask, you never know, I have 4 porsches in my hanger, no one ever left me a note!

Think Id ask at the airport before the handcuffs, not after.

Looks like a small, friendly airport. Smiles are far more common than handcuffs at airports like these.
On a long cross country flight last year, twice I was given a car to use while I stopped for gas. One guy went and got keys for me "Just in case you want to go into town", the other pointed at a car and said "Keys are above the visor". Most airports are friendly places. I'm down to two Porsches in my hangar, but I've got solid doors so no one can peek in. |

Ask around & find out who owns that space where it is parked.
An early T is worth good money these days. Tell the owner that and he might be motivated to sell it or at least drive it himself. Nobody wants the car to waste away. What year, BTW? |

Tires look pretty inflated so it doesn't seem to have been sitting a really long time!

Might just be where the owner puts it for the winter. Certainly does not look neglected/abandoned.

Could be his "airport car". I know quite a few guys who keep a car at different airports that they frequent often. One guy I know has three old Lotus's he restored and has let me use one when I landed there.

agreed, seems like a perfectly good place for an old 911 to rest.

do plates out your way have registration decals? If not is there one in the windshield? Ours have a year on them and that would certainly give you an idea for its most recent registration.

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to find the owner and talk to him/her. I'll try to get the VIN and a year. It's a pre-'73.5, correct?
Cheers, Paul.

It is '69-'71. I can't see the door handle well enough to tell which. The VIN will tell.
Even though it has a 'flag' mirror, a '72 would have '2.4' on the grill. I don't (can't) see any oil 'door'. It isn't a '73 (MFI or CIS). Best, Grady

Hmm. I gotta ask - what do you think your reaction would be if you walked around the corner of the hanger and found someone taking the cover off your parked 911?

The car was not touched during photography, nor was the cover touched. No, I didn't take the cover off, no, I didn't put it back on. Heck, I even covered the license plate in the pics I posted. If the guy is all bent out of shape when I ask what the story is about his car, I shall apologize. But most of the Pcar owners I have met have been very friendly, and quite open to talking about the marque. I'll keep you guys posted.
Paul.

I do strongly suspect that the owner didn't leave the cover like that, though. He's probably under the illusion that his car is safe where it is - think I'd track him down, if only to tell him that someone's been messing with it when he wasn't there... Heck, the car has better paint than mine, and I pretty much drive mine every day that a) we're on the same continent and b) it's not actually snowing/iced up. Doesn't look abandoned to me. Looks stored.

He didn't touch the car cover and that building is wide open...cut him some slack! This is how barn finds are made. With a building open to the elements a wind could have easily pushed it back.
One clue that the car isn't used regularly is that the interior door panel appears missing. As for the year, it should be a '70 or '71 judging by the door handles and chrome rear decklid. Best of luck Paul! Barn finds are so much fun... Last edited by jkarolyi; 01-27-2008 at 11:37 AM.. |
