Bosch Distro mystery

I just bought a Bosch Distributor for my 70T. I also purchased the tune-up kit from PP for the T. I guess it will come with a 6.8K RMP rotor. Anyways when cleaning my distributor up, I noticed a hard but paper thin, bakelite like gasket under the advance mechanism. This was partially broken and some of the pieces were floating around inside the distro. I decided to break the rest of it away and remove it all. Will this pose any problems?

If so, how can I get into the advance mechanism to replace that gasket?

Michael

Michael,

Stoddard's has a Teflon replacement for the original wafer-thin phenolic piece for 356 distributors, and it is very close to the required 6-cylinder part's dimensions, but may require some trimming to fit. At least the Teflon won't fracture the way the original Bosch piece does!

The above part number no longer shows up on their search page ... you will probably have to call about it ...

Disassembly of the distributor begins with removal of the point plate, then the cam ... as in the diagram below:

So you are saying that I actually need it? Could I get by without it? My fear is that pressed-in pin in the shaft. I know I can get it out, but can I get it back in....

Michael,

The gear doesn't have to come off unless end play exceeds about 0.004" ... then you would need to replace shims and fiber or steel washers between distributor body and gear.

To take off point plate, cam, springs and weights ... everything comes out the top.

Here is a thread discussing cleaning and lubing the distributor:

distributor lube...

Wow, that is a greate thread. I looked around for something like that too. I never took that felt out, because i thought that nothing small enough to fit down there couls hold it all together! heheh

When you say "end play" do you mean pulling the cam and advance mech up vertically? Because after that fiber washer disintegrated, there is at least .5mm play in in that movement, but no play in the shaft laterally.

Thanks Warren,
looks like you're the Man
