Question Let's just say ya have a broken head stud.......

What is the typical labor cost associated with replacing a head stud?

Cost of labor for replacing one cylinder?

Fire way.....

do you have to? I hear one is ok...two you might have a problem....do a compression check when you break two. cuz, if your gonna tear into one cylinder, you might be needing a clutch and many other things while the engine is out....save your money, until you have have to. who knows...she may run for years.

I think it is imperitive for Craig to repair his headstud and not drive w/ a broken one, due to the high state of tune his turbo motor is in. It is putting a lot more stress on the head studs than a normal 3.0, which is the most common motor to break or be driven w/ broken headstuds.

Craig, I'm not sure how much DIY stuff you do, but headstuds aren't that hard to replace. Otherwise, I'm sure someone will chime in on price, but you must be looking at at least $800 for motor/trans R&R, and for your turbo probably around another 8 hours of work (guessimate) to tear down the motor and replace the stud. Your turbo has a lot of connections and a lot of stuff to disconnect to get down to the longblock.

Well I'm jumping the gun a bit here with the prognosis, but the 930 is down on power..........57 HP. 418 vs. 361 "Wah", right?
---------------------------------------------
Here are the particulars.

What we have here is an overlay of 'before' and 'after':

Top line vs. bottom line.

Same temp
Same gas
Same timing
Virtually the same fuel mixture
BOV works fine
Headers seal fine
Factory boost tester shows exactly .8 bar - as before
Turbo seals and shaft tolerances are fine

Consistent power 'loss' across the board

I'd suggest a leakdown test.

I've recently been down this road. 3000 for all replaced with 993 studs along with some other work like exhaust studs, gaskets, etc. Prices will probably be a bit more on your car, but then there is the "while you're in there" philisophy that will push it over 5-7k.

I had also been told by engine builders of good rep that a NA car may be ok with a broken stud for quite a long time, but a blown one will lift the heads and cause expensive damage.

Maybe check the basics first.... I see the HP shown on the graph to be "SAE"...but ask the shop how it's captured...as "SAE-corrected" or what ???

Otherwise....day-to-day atmospheric and weather differences can show big, recorded HP changes...

- Wil ( wishful you don't have a head stud problem)

Background:

Engine built as a 3.4 in mid-2004
Same dyno, same conditions, same owner/operator

I don't know if it is a head stud, just a really good gue$$ at this point.
We'll see on Monday. Until then what else might it be - taking into account the items we've already checked?

Yep.......that's the plan. Probably a clutch too -
That is, if the leakdown shows a problem at all

Have you bothered to pull the covers and check for headstud "loosness" and/or barrel nuts that have fallen off? Can you see any sludge between the cylinders and the heads? Also, if the engine was rebuilt in 2004 to be a 3.4L, I'd hope the OEM Dilavars were replaced!

I'm with Wil, let's hope it's something related to the Dyno or wheather!

One other thing to check are the fuel injector intake blocks that fit under the intake manifold. They're made from some phenolic (spelling?) material and are VERY prone to cracking!!! In fact all six of mine were cracked. When I decided to pull my turbo engine to "go nutz" with, it sounded like an early Beetle or Harley engine. Like a VERY serious exhaust leak, although my header had no cracks. I thought I had broken a headstud for sure. As I began dissassembly, all the studs were perfect! I think I either had a bad injector (causing a cylinder not to get fuel), or was suffering from a serious intake leak. Ignition was fine. My engine had oil leaks galore, so the rebuild was needed from my perspective! Then the "while you're in there" spiral started...long story short, when or if I decide to sell this car, someone will wind up with a VERY WELL sorted 930!

Drives well, no funny sounds at all that I can tell over the loud exhaust.
Been down on power for quite some time.

Cars with known P/W ratios that are higer than the 930 at 418 rwhp were pulling away last summer. Thus, the dyno check late last year.
