Question 3-pin Bosch module question

Someone in DE is working on an engine with a 3-pin module and wired up according to the Pelican '71 and '73 wiring diagram.
Pin "D" on the module has 2 wires going back to the coil and also to the points but he says there is no connection spade for the wire to be connected. This seems to be ground, and he connected it to ground somewhere. Should there be a spade (Faston) connection on the distributor for this wire?
Symptoms: With plug connected to ignition cable from coil, and the other end grounded, no spark from plug with engine cranking, but one good spark as soon as cranking stops. (Ignition off)

What gives?
